Internally regulated alternator..
What is a good year and model to get a internally regulated alternator off of? mid 80's chevy truck? just curious.
also can i just switch over to the internally regulated alt and just change the way it is wired up? Thanks Rick |
1986 chevy celebrity= 100 amp alt....but you gotta change the pulley.
1978,79 chevy truck with a 454....big alternator that pushes 140 amps....just make sure it fits |
I am not sure what year mine is, I just went in and told the counter guy that I was swapping over to an internal regulated alternator and he hooked me up. Showed me the different plug that I needed. Pretty easy installation, I know there is a way to jumper the original regulator and use the existing truck wires, but since I mounted the alternator on the passenger side, I bypassed the original regulator all together. I want to say I ran a hot wire straight from the battery to the Alt. and then since I had a dummy light instead of an amp guage, I just looked up the wires in the diagrahm for the dummy light and wired it up so if something went wrong, I would get the light. I used to have a website that showed the step by step process on an early Chevelle, it's the same for our trucks. I will see if I can find it again. Good luck.

Here, check this site out. The second wiring diagram is pretty much how I set mine up and it works great!

I ordered this p/n from summit. SUM-811001 100 amps and bolts in original location. There is also a great write-up in the FAQ section about the wiring from external to internal reg. alternators. It took me 15 minutes max to do the whole thing. :metal:
