Gas $3.12/gal - What have you done to improve MPG?

Since the gas prices took a jump overnight, thought this would be a good subject to see how people are helping their MPG....

I have tried a few things myself. I started at about 12MPG:
- Tune up - gain 1MPG
- New plugs - nothing
- New K/N filter - nothing
- Elec Fan - gain 1MPG

So now I am up to 14MPG.

Things not yet tried:
- pcv filter
- acetone additive
- swap rear to a 3.08
- swap tranny to a 2004r
- farting in gas tank

PS:I have a 307v8 with a 2bb and a standard 3speed and 3.73 rear end.

I have 66 primary jets 650 Cfm
K&N
Accel Super coil HEI Max timing on the verge of detonation.
700R and
3:73's
28" tire
Elec Fan
No PCV

I get 12MPG on super and 11 with regular gas.

Putting a mostly stock roller cam 305 with the swirl port heads, (yep, all the wrong stuff) in our current project, headers, HEI, performer intake and edel 600 carb, and clutch fan. Vacuum and mecahnical advance will be fined tuned and will jet the carb down as much as is practical. 3.73 gears, OD manual trans and a little taller tires. Might put an air dam on the front if I can find one that will fit.

Parked my 2500HD Quadcab after I put 57 dollars of gas in it and it had 1/4 of a tank. I am putting my 63 shortwide back on the road being it has a strait 6 with a 1 barrel holly. The 2500HD will only come out in case of emergency as long as the Gas Prices stays were they are. I am seriously thinking about looking into a Hydrogen Injection system for one of my Frankenstien Projects.

Re: Gas $3.12/gal - What have you done to improve MPG?

Was getting around 15MPG with 3,07 gears.
Now gets about 14 with 3,73 gears.
355 c.i., 1406 Edelbrock 600CFM carb, TH400 trans.
I went the wrong way didn't I? For gas mileage, anyway.

I ride my bike into town and take the MAX train to work every day. Since January I have put less than 200 miles on my truck. Mostly to haul hay, dirt, and take my dirt bike to the trails.

on my 92 with 210,000 i get about avg of 16 now that its warmer out, 14 in winter. all i have done is k&n, chip, lower thermostat, full length headers, and true dual exhaust. actually i achieved the best ever with that 1 month ago, 19 mpg going home for spring break, helped that there was no wind out, a first for north dakota!

On a slighty different note , the big three oil companies projected profits this year is a combined $80 billion . That's profit not sales . :whine:

Just filled the truck up today, cost a little over $50 for about 18 gallons. I have a stock 350 in my truck, with 194cc camel hump heads, stock 4bbl Quadrajet, stock cast iron intake, points ignition, TH400 auto, and 4.10 gears with a no-spin and new 33" tires. I'm not sure what kind of MPG I'm getting, but I have to fill the truck up about every 8 days and I drive it a lot. It's probably in the 10-11 MPG area. I'm guessing I better run some fuel system cleaner in the gas and install a HEI distributor.............

Traded in my Avalanche for an Aveo, no long distance parts runs in my 99 3/4 BB burb. Use my girl friends 2002 Impala when it won't fit in the Aveo and I don't need the burb. Amazing what fit's when the rear seat is folded down............shhh don't tell her, a 350 short block fits pretty good!

I bought a new radiator for my V6 DD to get it back on the road so I'm not getting raped driving the truck every day.

I drive a 96 neon to work and back - just a beater car with cold a/c I picked up from a friend for 1k, it had 170k miles on it when I bought it, now it has just toppled 200k, I get 28mpg in it, not bad for 1k....drive it until it blows plus the insurance is cheap....I even parked my IndyRam since it only gets 16mpg...on the weekends I take out my pride and joy, the 67...I am running a 510 lift cam in a 93' motor in it, it only likes super....I wish I could afford to drive it everyday but it doesn't have A/C yet....Texas is starting to heat up....

Ditto.

I put $24.82 in the tank 3 days ago. The last time I stopped for gas was 12/9/05.

My daily driver gets 36-41mpg depending on how I drive. That car is a 94 Escort with 248,xxx miles on it - all driven by me.

If you guys are looking for a cheap daily driver, and like me only buy American, look at a 94 or 95 Escort 5-speed. My AC still works. My winter mileage is 32-34. Summer is 36-41. I bought mine brand new for $10,353. Now you can get one with 100,000+ on the clock for $500-$1500. If you change the oil regularily and put a new timing belt and water pump on every 70k, you should easily get 200,000 out of the car. PLUS you'll be saving wear and tear on your truck.

I'm sorry to say it guys but very few of these trucks should be daily drivers. If you aren't getting 20+ mpg in your daily driver you should really re-think what you drive every day. My Escort is getting tired and will soon have to be replaced. I won't buy anything that isn't American and doesn't have an EPA 30 on the window sticker.

Marketing,ok we've sold too many big trucks(gas eaters) not selling any little cars so let's raise gas up so,everyone will quit buying the big trucks, and start buying the little cars, then oh were not selling enough gas(gas company) were loosing money, let's lower the gas prices so we'll sell more gas, after they've sold alot of little cars,And then it start's all over again. What's the world coming too,I know It's coming to an END ,SO EVERYBODY BETTER BE GETTIN READY.I AM,RANDY

I junked the POS gas engine and went with a Diesel.............

But I haven't got the driveshaft back that the Diesel tore up, or I'd be driving it.

I don't drive half as much as I used to. I live 6 miles from work so I don't mind driving the Z71 and I can't wait to get the '67 going again. But if I lived any further away, I'd have to consider a 4 cylinder S10 or maybe even a ranger:barf: I don't know whats wrong with me, I'm just not happy driving a car.

Re: Gas $3.12/gal - What have you done to improve MPG?

Well as crazy as this sounds, I got out the 2000 Corvette Convertible out because it gets around 28 mpg if you keep your foot out of it. My Chevrolet extd. cab that my dealership provides only gets 18mpg and my 2000 powersmoke diesel gets only 13 mpg with 35" tires. I work 87 miles away one way so it was killing me on fuel. I also now rent an apartment out of town with one of my co-workers and it is still killing me driving back and forth to work and then home on the weekends. Do not know what else to do. Looking in to buying a 500.00 dollar little 2 door civic.
