Consolidation project 5/3 build thread.

I've started my combination of my two trucks. Ran out of time today. But got the 65 stripped down to the frame. New bed is sitting on it but mounts are different. Gonna steal the supports from the 65's old bed. Right now the entire front end of it is sitting in its own bed on a little roller cart. Tomarrow begins the tear down of the 63. Gotta put tabs on all the wires so I'll know where everything goes. I'll be sure to take pictures of both trucks' progress tomarrow. For now I'm tired and hungry.

Re: Consolidation project 5/3 build thread.

ok as promised here are the pics. Didn't get much done tonight. Just disconnected any wiring from the motor to the body. Plans for tomarrow include Draining the radiator, disconnecting the brake and clutch line, unbolting the cab mounts, and removing all the junk out of the old bed in order to steal the front bed panel and the floor braces with the bed mounts since there is a difference between 62 and 65 frames.
Nothing special. Just a huge V6

Front end of the 65. The cab is just sitting on the frame

THe old bed full of assorted truck parts.

If you look to the right you'll see the later model tank i want to use eventually. Anybody know what it might be out of?

You getting the cab blasted and such also?

You might as well do a frame up while you got the thing apart. A grinder ... steel whire brush and some rustoleum .. your frame will look good as new!

Re: Consolidation project 5/3 build thread.

Re: Consolidation project 5/3 build thread.

Earl, Bioenvironmental is a pain here. THey shut down the paint booth. So now i can't paint my truck myself. Gotta pay somebody else to do the same job i could do myself.

BTW... anybody nearby have a 350 they dont want? I've decided not to keep the 305. It'll stay in just long enough to find another motor.

Tank removal: remove straps over tank, remoe clamps holding tank to rubber hose that connects to the outside junction pipe, then slowly pull while lifting up on it toward the passanger side and out towards the firewall until the hose on the inlet comes off, and there u go....

Re: Consolidation project 5/3 build thread.

Got alot done today. Unfortunately I misplaced my camera so only got a few pics with the phone. Got the cab off the 63 and onto the frame of the 65 along with the drive train. Gotta lift them back up a lil tomarrow and put the mounts in then just secure everything in. Hopefully will finish it up tomarrow save maybe the bed because i've gotta take it completely apart. Here's a pic or two to keep Earl from slaying me.

Re: Consolidation project 5/3 build thread.

Well I've been slacking a bit lately but i've got myself back up and going. Waged war with the steering column all last night but I can turn once again. Tonight i'm gonna get the brakes workin again, install the drive shaft, fix the hole in the radiator that just popped up, and get the gas flowing again. Changed the tank and sending unit so now i'm having issues getting the gas from the tank to the fuel pump. Hope to have it up and going on it's own power tonight. Then all that's left is the bed and lights.

Re: Consolidation project 5/3 build thread.

Looking good..did you ever get an engine to put in it?

Stepside65 10-26-2007 06:11 PM

Re: Consolidation project 5/3 build thread.

All i've got is that boat anchor for an engine from the GMC... Can't afford a crate motor, and there's a guy wanting 800 for a 3rd gen Camaro with 350 tpi and i'm guessin a 700r4; but i simply don't have the funds and wont for a while due to the holidays.

Re: Consolidation project 5/3 build thread.

Sounds like your getting closer. Im sure we can find you an engine when your ready.

Re: Consolidation project 5/3 build thread.

OK haven't really done much that's noticable but progress is slowly being made. The 305 is still not running due to fuel delivery problems. The driveshaft is in, the bumper on, 1 of the 2 holes in the radiator patched (found out about the second one later) the brake lines replaced, the speedo cable reattached, and the steering column swapped out since i broke my old one. Found out the wheel cylinders up front are shot... might just switch spindles and be done with it since the 63 had brand new brakes on the front. One of my two front springs is weaker than the other so i've gotta switch them out for some new ones some day. The bed is still just sitting cockeyed on the frame (to be addressed after payday). And the hood is still off. Other than that it's ready to go.
Here's a pic or two to try to show my little progress.

Poor truck doesn't know whether it wants to be black or white...
http://i185.photobucket.com/albums/x...65/65GM008.jpg
Dunno what color i'm gonna paint it yet. Will post a poll some time soon to get everybody's input cuz there's so many combos I like.

Till next time,

Re: Consolidation project 5/3 build thread.

If your like me it will ether be primer black, gray or red. Looks like your coming along good. concidering the amount of work you have done you have got a lot done in verry little time.

Re: Consolidation project 5/3 build thread.

I know Earl but it's never enough... I'll never be satisfied till the body's cherry again, the motor is good and strong, and I can drive it.

Re: Consolidation project 5/3 build thread.

I hope you have better luck at getting that far along then me seems like its always something keeping me from finishing a project then I end up selling it or moving to some thing new.
