original in-dash speaker question

does anyone know what the stock dimensions are for the stock in dash speaker for the 67-72's are? or is it a specialty speaker that is made to fit the truck => a kind that i would have to buy from a parts vendor. just wondering if i can go to best buy and get something that may be better quality or not? no trying to do too much custom work either to make something fit. thanks

Re: original in-dash speaker question

It is a 6x9 speaker. LMC and other companies carry 2 3.5s on a plate or a dual voice coil 6x9 to have stereo sound if wanted. if not, you can get a 6x9 speaker to replace it.

Re: original in-dash speaker question

When I bought my 71 shortbed stepside ~ 12 years ago, one of the first things I did was to mount (2) 4" coaxial speakers I had lying around from some other project up under the center of the dash at the single 6x9 speaker location.

I used a scrap of 3/8" plywood to attach the speakers, then mounted the plywood plate with the speakers attached to the truck.

About five years ago, I replaced the (2) 4" speakers with (2) 4x6 JBL GT series speakers. The speakers are oriented with the two 4" sides next to each other, so that the two speakers together mounted on the plywood plate make a 6x8 size pair of speakers. This still fits up under the center of the dash.
