i had 1 of those ram air setups on a cavalier years ago and loved it. plain jane cavi 2.2 5 speed no ac ran valvoline and always put a couple ounces of PF201 in it and would get about 48mpg on the hway. installed the ram air and picked up some more pep at speed and cruising on hway mpg's jumped up to 51-53 mpg. let me know how it works out for you

Stealth ram air intake for the 4.3.
What ya think?

I finished the installation today. I'm driving nearly 150 miles this afternoon. I should get a good feel on how it works. I hope to increase city MPG to 19+. The Jimmy averages 18.5 MPG since PCM programming.

The snorkel costs $17.50 at a local performance shop. I had to buy some 3" hose clamps. Everything else was sitting in my garage. The black hose is actually race quality brake cooling hose. I used it on my 83 Chevy ram air intake too.

trailwart,
Thanks for the PM.

Yes, I noticed less throttle on the highway too. It does accellerate better too. It revs past 5000 really easy. I'll keep posting updates.

No TBI.

Here another option.

You can do the same with a TBI. It may take a little more or less work though. The modification was easy. The hardest part was removing the air dam. I did not want to cut it while mounted.

Yeah I was able to make them bigger, your working with something newer than mine. Mine is a 91 so it is TBI and just a regular round style air filter.I bet I could still make it work though.

If you need an idea, checkout www.ramairbox.com The site has kit available for TBI trucks.

I wonder if using smooth pipe would help flow with all the bends required? Did this mod trip the check engine light?

gchemist 06-28-2008 09:08 PM

Re: Mystery modification!

A smooth pipe would be better. No the SES light has not turned on. I'm not halfway through the first tank since the modificaton. I can tell it has picked up a little milage.

Any modification that can lower air temperature helps.

Checkout this modification. Less work.

Simplest install with smooth pipe.

Here is a true extreme air induction modification.

Smooth hoses.

My city driving average speed is 35-45. A lot of freeway hopping on the interstate to reach some places. No block to block lights unless I go downtown.
