If you're worried about the rubber boot-I just use the end of the fork to get under it and then give it a good whack. I've never broken a boot this way. Just do it carefully and you should be fine.

If I need to save/reuse the ball joints I support vehicle by the frame, remove cotter pins, back off on the castle nut a few turns, while leaving the control arm unsupported, turn the spindle to where I can give the area of the spindle where the joint passes through a couple of GOOD SHARP BLOWS with a BFH. This will break them loose without risk of damaging the boots, now support lower control arm and remove the nuts.

Usually, you can remove the upper balljoints th way Gordo said. Mine were so stuck I HAD to use a fork and BFH. I just greased the fork real good and still got em out in one piece. Lowers, I think you'll have to get pressed out? Haven't done my lowers yet.
