I'm interested too.

Re: shallow mount subs

Of the one's you listed, Kenwood is the only one I would trust.

I'd go with Pioneer or JL audio and feed them as much power as possible.

I haven't heard them, so I can't offer an opinion.

Re: shallow mount subs

Well before I answer your question, please answer this one....

How much space do you have to work with? There are several subs that work well in smaller spaces, and since they dont feature a vented pole piece, then you can save extra space since you can mount the sub with the magnet right up against the rear of the box. If you have a sub that has a vented pole piece, then generally you need about 2 inches for proper cooling affect (the reason the venting is there in the first place).

Some of the subs I can recommend are not considered shallow mount but work well in a shallow mount application.

And remember a pair of 10 inch subs has more cone surface area than a single 12. More cone area = increased air movement = more output

Re: shallow mount subs

im going to either put the subs under the passenger seat or build a shallow console box

Re: shallow mount subs

Have you a depth measurement of the space? 6 inches, 8 inches, what?

killacheyenne 12-28-2008 10:32 PM

Re: shallow mount subs

if i go with the console i will have around 6 or seven inches and a underseat mount i will have around 4.5 or 5 inches

Re: shallow mount subs

I have a shallow mount pioneer that requires .5-1ft of space. I was amazed at how well it worked.....It is pretty shallow (I'm sure specs are on their website). I still can't believe that much thump can come from a thin speaker like that, but I've had it in my 05 for like 6 months and just installed it in my 72 with no problems at all. Think I paid like 200 for it when they first came out.

Re: shallow mount subs

Well dont confuse a shallow mount sub with a sub that requires a small volume. Many 10s and even some 12s will work in as little as 0.5 cubic feet sealed. If you have about 7 inches, you need to deduct 1.5" since your box will be made of most likely .75 inch MDF x 2 sides = 1.5". Or if you make your enclosure from fglass then you can get away with .75 inches all together. There are some very nice subs that only require 5.25" of mounting depth...one that comes to mind is Image Dynamics IDQ10.

What? Go with the pioneer premier and get some serious bang for your buck...

I am now thinking about doing a console box with 2 12s and was wondering if anyone has tried or heard about the kenwood w3011 subs. They seem alright but I was wondering if any of you guys had an opinion on these

Re: shallow mount subs

I've heard 'em and they aren't anything special. If you're building a console, then go with two quality 12's. Arc Audio's FD12's are a great sub and look good too.

I have 2 Kicker CVT 10's under the back seat firing down in the 07 Silvy, and even with about 200 watts a piece they sound great! good luck with whatever you go with!:metal:

Re: shallow mount subs

I have used in the past a Lanzar OPTI Drive 150D digital amp with good success. These were little powerhouses in the past....but not so much now.

There are some really good car audio companies that are not mainstream (mainstream like Rockford Fosgate, Kenwood, Pioneer, Kicker, etc...) that dont rely on huge marketing campaigns to promote their gear, so they dont need to charge huge markups to make the money back spent on advertising. They rely on word of mouth at audio competitions, so you really get your best return (quality per $) with these.

I would typically advise that you stay away from Ebay on these types of deals.

ED SQ10 Subwoofer FTW. I highly recommend Elemental Designs products.

I went with the Kenwood self powered 2-10" subs off my kenwood dvd flip and love it. only sits about 5" high and about10 to 12" wide. Just my 2 cents.

I have some 8" Earthquake shallow mount subs.

I was impressed with them. They don't handle a lot of power, but they hit just about as hard as my single 1000W 10" in a truck box.

I have a Mobile Spec 5 Channel, its 400 x4 and 450 x 1 (class d) in my silverado, with mobile spec components in the doors and 2 cvt 10s. It plays them all very well!
