Not my truck, but I saved this one from another member, since it's pretty clear how it mounts. I think this bracket is missing the two legs that bolt thru the top lip of the bed.:

thanks 68. that saves me from going out to the garage and pulling the spare off!

Thanks for the replys. Now does anyone know if there are other styles of carriers that fit our trucks. because this is what I received from Kennys truck for a 72 stepside? I cannot see how it would attach without modification. It is also assembled with rivets.

Re: Step side spare tire carrier

that is definitely not for a 67-72. maybe for the 60-66. mounting that one may be "do-able" with some mods but you would have to do some rod bending and welding.

if your ever up here in the KC area, you can look at my bracket and take all the measurements you need....

and it looks like you have a nice, rust free step bed!!

That's pretty much how the 1 on my '69 looks.
If you need a picture, or 2, send me a PM in the morning (it's getting dark out) & I'll drop the spare tire & shoot a couple.

Re: Step side spare tire carrier

Palf70 has it. As I said in the first pix, the top two legs looked like they were gone off that bracket.

If you're running 5-lug wheels, like it looks like you might possibly be, in the top picture, you'll have to do a very minor mod to the spare bracket.

On mine, since I had changed-over from the stock 1968 6-lug rims, to newer 5-lug rims, I had to cut off two of the threaded bolts off the bracket. One of them was all that would "catch" a hole right for a 5-lug wheel. The spare sits very-slightly too-far forward from stock position, using that one bolt, but nobody really sees it, & I can't believe you'd have enough load on it to need three lugs holding the spare on. I thought I'd try it for a while, & tack another lug bolt back on if needed. Has been that way ever since, for 5 years.

I have checked mine, to see if that one nut has ever loosened-up over time, & it hasn't moved.

Mine's a long step, so Palf probably has it nailed.

I'll still put up a couple of pics in the A.M.

Looks like you have a long box mount. Hear are a few scans from my 67-72 Factory Assembly Instruction Manual showing the mount on a short box and a Long box.

Re: Step side spare tire carrier

I talked with Kenny @ Kennys truck where I purchased the Tire Carrier & he said that the one he shipped me was off a stepper shortbed and that there are 2 diffrent mounts. I would assume that a PO must have added it. He also said that he will make good on our deal. So Thanks for all the replys and help!

I have a short bed 69 c10 stepside. i just had the side mount fabricated by Longmont Welding in CO. We used the plans for the 58 chevy which turned out to work fine. message me if you want me to send you the plans. They are too big to post here.

I just bought a 68 short bed stepside with a tire carrier. It was a Forest Service truck maybe in Yellowstone National Park. The tire carrier has a metal plate on it I've not seen before on other trucks. Any more information about tire carriers would be appreciated

That would be part of the tire lock & worth quite a bit of money. I will add a picture of the lock that goes with it in this post shortly.

Edit: Here is a picture of the complete lock and lug nut cover.

And here is a thread about them.

https://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/...d.php?t=750091

If I remember correctly I sold my lock, special lug nut, and lug nut cover for $200. I may still have a lock.

I haven't even cleaned out the cab yet so I will see if there is a lock behind the mouse nest in the glovebox.
