Hardwood over a steel bed?

So i have been doing some thinking about my truck im in the process of putting it back together when i get this bright idea i want a wooden floor but i have steel at the moment. Now the truck is already painted except inside the bed cause i was going to to a line-x to match paint. So is it too late or can i install wood over the steel? whats the skinny on doing wooden floor.

Bruce Horkey sells the shoe deck which is wood bed over a steel. YThey are little pricey, but worth IMO. 7DEETWO has one in truck.

If I was going to put a varnished wood bed in my truck ( I will once again in the 48) I would want the inside of the box as slick as the outside and just as shiny.

I'm undecided as to whether I will paint or do the spray on bedliner on my 71 but as it will still be expected to haul stuff and be a real truck and not a show truck it may get the bedliner treatment.

Those wood floor kits look terrific. But I use truck like a truck sometimes and carry all kind of junk in it I cant see my self personally spending 1,200 and not been able to even carry a cooler in there. I think that I am just going to maybe get a gaylords bed cover and at least it will cover the inside of the bed's imperfections.

Beat me to it 67_C-30! :D This is a very nice kit, I have seen several trucks (including new ones) and it looks absolutely killer!

thanks guys for the feedback didn't realize this would be so costly and with so many things to buy i better put this off until another time.Cause i sure don't need this to drive it and i have been waiting long enough but that kit looks really killer.

I'm sticking with the steel bed in mine with a spray on bed liner.

I have a late model sportside bed and I'm doing wood over steel. Got red oak from Lowes and cut the grooves for the strips. I ordered the polished stainless strips from Mar-K. I'm in the process of coating the wood right now.

One things for sure... you better have some money for some gas come the:

Midwest All Truck Nat's in Riverside, MO (September 11-13).

And the Midwest Board Meet in Kirksville, MO (May 30-31)

You will NOT meet any better people, than the ones from this board.

I took 3/4" plywood, cut it to fit and covered it in black vinyl... The sides I cut out of luann and covered in black vinyl.. the sides are held on with velcro..

how does it attach to the steel floor? And does the grooves in the steel floor cause a problem or do you put something else down first.

Is there any way to get a piece of hardwood plywood and cut grooves for the strips? Then just lay it in there.? I would need a sheet of wood 6x6.5 feet?

I have a 91 step-side, is it possible to put wood in it? I can get the individual strips and i can get the wood but how hard is it and what all would I have to do?

Yes you can use plywood and cut the groves in for the strips. I used 5/8" oak plywood and cut to fit over the center of the stips in the bed. Send pm if you have ??

I don't see why you can't. Just becareful and not drill into any wires or lines under the bed.

That was for the wood only. Hardware and paint was extra.

Re: Hardwood over a steel bed?

that is the only thing about my 67 that I went back on my word about , I said I would not buy a truck unless it had the wood floor but my 67 came with the metal floor , I will change it next year after I get the truck paid off ,
NO WAY ! would I put wood over the metal , the only thing that will be hauled in my truck is my bench racing chair's

So you used a sheet of plywood and cut grooves in it to attach the stainless strips??? Did you use two sheets or were you able to find a sheet of oversized plywood to make it seamless??? Any more details would be great:metal:
