My 67 Build Thread

SOLD IT!!!

Hey guys. Im pretty new to the forum but have been getting ideas and info. for the last month or so. I finally found and got a truck that I think has some potential. It is a 1967 Chevy C10 Short Bed Step Side with a I6 and a 4 speed on the floor. It does run and drive, but not very well. Lets just say she isn't road worthy yet. I believe she is a old farm truck....I bought it from a guy who goes out and buys lots of vehicles from peoples properties. Anyways, the odometer shows 81,281 but Im sure that has rolled over at least once. I haven't ran the VIN yet and dont really wanna pay for carfax. Maybe someone on here could forward the info to me. Also, if you could tell me anything by my VIN, feel free to let me know. It is CS147Z159484. Im really diggin the 67 look. Im not too sure about the step side yet. I may have to switch on a fleet side.

Im not sure where exactly to start or what I wanna do to it. Im really leaning towards the old school/rat rod look. Flat black and wide whites. Airbags would be nice. I also thought it would be cool to drop a 6.2L diesel into it and run on Waste Vegetable Oil. Well see.

Here are a few pics. Check them out and let me know what you think. Thanks
Michael

'67 swb steppers are my favorite. They are not rare, but unique.

They look good lowered some. If you want a cruiser a V-8 with an automatic would be a good addition.

My '67 swb stepper has the l6 with the 4 speed and I plan on keeping it that way because I enjoy driving it and at my age I have no need for speed.

Good luck with your new purchase. I think what you paid is not too much for this part of the country.

Danny

Re: My 67 Build Thread

Another side note, Im wanting to put some rally wheels on it and I came across a good deal. i have the choice of 5 or 6 lug. I would like to do discs all the way around eventually and dont want to buy wheels again then. Just out of curiousity, for you disc conversion guys, what did u use for your disc conversion on the front and rear? And is it 5 or 6 lug now?

How funny man, I just picked up a 68 short stepper that had been sitting for 13 years and the exact same white wagon wheels! :D
When I first bought my 67 the truck was the exact same color. Must be a NM thing. PM me if you need anything

72blckbuty: thanks

michael bustamante: I was just about to send you the link to this thread. haha. Nice. Im not a fan of wagon wheels unless they are on a 4x4. Same color huh? This paint almost looks rolled on. Must be. Thanks. Will do.

Re: My 67 Build Thread

So today I got a little cleaning up done. I pulled out the old dry rotted rubber floor mat and scraped off the old "sound deadening padding" underneath. After all the scraping and vacuuming up of rat turds, I was glad to see the floor pretty clean. I have quite a few questions:

I want to convert my truck to 5 lug disc brakes all the way around...what can I use to do so? I understand that I can use 73-87 front hubs, rotors and calipers, correct? What do I need to convert the back? And is there a brake booster and master cylinder that will bolt right in for use with my stock pedal setup? According to the build sheet in my glove box, it has a posi. No need to change that out, right?

Also on the build sheet, it says deluxe air heater. Does that mean I have a A/C cab? I have included a pic of the heater/ air setup under the dash and under the hood.

I need to order a new ignition switch and trim ring, just curious if anyone could tell me which one I need? I have a pic included of the dash. Not sure if I need the early 67 or the later 67 one? I will be ordering through classicparts.com

Last of all, Im also gonna be ordering some patch panels from classicparts.com. Just curious what I need to order, aside from the rockers, cab corners, and front floor pans???

Also, maybe someone could tell me if I should post my questions separate from my build thread? Im new to this. Thanks

Buy the patch panels and fix it. You will be glad you did. I want a 67 stepside and just can not seem to find one. You are a LUCKY GUY!!!! Put a mild stroker and an automatic in it and you will be very happy.

Re: My 67 Build Thread

love the glove box. You can get the switch at Checker/o`reilleys. and I got an early 67 ignition trim, lock piece for you. Floor doent look bad but you definatly need rockers, look underneath and see if the rockers will need the back plates also. and too, check your cab mounts, those might need replacing also. I have a matching gas pedal for you too PM me. its cool that you got the original inside door handles, theyre 1 year only. as for converting to 5 lug, you can use either 71-72 front disc brake set up or 73+ its up to you, as for the rear youd be best off swapping the whole rear end, (possably losing the posi unless you found another posi in 5 lug). do you have coil or leaf springs in the rear?

I definitely will. Haha. Im a luck guy huh? Ill be lucky if I don't go broke building this thing. I don't know about a stroker. Im thinking I might build the I6 up. Well see.

michael bustamante:

I thought the glove box was pretty sweet. haha. Im gonna go grab a few things from autozone today and the ignition switch is on my list. I believe the rockers underneath and cab mounts are ok. Ill take a few pics and post them later. I didn't know about the door handles. Ill have to hang onto them then. As for the rear end, what are my options as far as that goes? Which vehicle axle to use? I saw on brothers website that they had a 5 lug disc conversion...but $400. Is it worth it? The truck has coils in the rear. Actually heavy duty coils, per the build sheet on the glove box door.

looks like a good start. good luck with your build.

michael bustamante 05-07-2009 03:12 PM

Re: My 67 Build Thread

theyre actually 3/4 ton coils in the rear, for half tons they call em heavy duty. well if you wanna keep the posi, ECE also sells the 5 lug axle shafts that are made to go in the rear end, swapping the whole rear end will be more difficult now though since its coil rear, if you pulla rear end out of a 72 and up truck itll be leaf and you`ll have to cut off the pads on the rear end and install coil type from your exhisting rear end. Im going 6 lug posi rear and 6 lug disc brakes myself from GMC pauls. This way I get to keep my rallys and not try to find 5 lug rallys

my67chevytruck

Thank you. Im sure Ill need it.

michael bustamante:

oh ok. so can I order regular 1/2 ton lowering springs and install without any issues? Swapping the entire rear axle is a little more than I wanna get into. Plus Ill stick with my posi. Ill check out ece and gmc pauls. Ill definitely wanna have rallys.

How funny, it must be a NM thing, I bought a 69 short wide 2months ago and mine has the exact same wheels also. (not the same color though)

69FI: Thats funny. Wish mine came with rallys.

Update

Some stuff that got done today:
Put a new battery in. Installed pulley and fan. Put in new oil pressure gauge line. Also put in new ignition switch and key. Got a sweet original 67 ignition chrome bezel ring....thanks to michael bustamante. It worked great. Thank you.

I could not find the right air filter and got the wrong belt for the fan/alt. Im gonna have to get some new battery cables, cause these are old and cut up. Also, gonna need to find a bolt for one side of the motor mounts. Also gonna need to find some rear tail light lenses. Gonna need to find a filter, cause I went to two places and no dice.

I got her started up today and I must say she idles pretty smooth. I didn't drive her due to the alternator and fan not being hooked up. And my tires are pretty bad. It runs so quiet that you almost cant tell its running. When I gave it gas the first time without choke, it shot up a decent size fire ball. Not sure what caused that. When revving the engine, it almost shutters and sounds like its gonna die out and then past that point it sounds ok. I think Im gonna need to replace the plugs, wires, points and clean up the carb.

Cool truck. I'm diggin that valve cover. Does it say "Chevrolet" in script? You got the 67' with the small rear window. That is desirable.

Where in NM do you live? I live in ABQ and I have a 68 fleetside with a 250 I6 and a 4 speed.

Thanks. Yeah, I like the valve cover too. It does say Chevrolet. I really do like the 67 small rear window. I live in ABQ too. Nice! You have any pics of it? Have any extra parts laying around?
