Transmission question

Can anyone tell me the difference between a TH400 and TH350. Is one better than the other? I am going to be putting a 350 in a 85 1/2 ton that currently has a V6 with the TH400.
Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Thanks, Kerwin

I think the TH400 is supposed to be stronger than the TH350. Is the v-6 stock? A weird combo!

Yes, as far as I know the V6 is original, it's in a 1985 GMC. I think it's the TH400 trans, I'm going by what the pan looks like and the modulator on the side. Unless it is possibly something else??

Thanks, Kerwin

It's a 700R4. It's an overdrive tranny, right? If it's a square pan, it's a 700R4.

No 85 1/2 tons came with V-6's and TH400's. The auto options were TH350C's 3 speed, and 700R4's 4 speed.

Keep the 700R4 with the 350. A great combo. Of course the 85 700 is not as good as the later years. Mine went out and I replaced it with one from a 89. The mid 88 thru 92's are the best years.

A 700R4 wouldn't have a modulator on it.Also what size V6,the bell housing is different on a 2.8 V6. The 4.3 V6 is the same as a V8.

There were no 2.8 V-6's in 85 C-10's. If it is a V-6, it is a 4.3, so the tranny will fit a V-8.

Well I don't know what in the crap came on who in whichever year. Your question was which is better the 400 or the 350. Well, the 400 is a 'ell of a lot tougher transmission. I used mine for heavy pullin' and well, I ate up the 350's two of 'em as a matter of fact. So I had a 400 built, and now I spent some cash on her, but she never skipped a beat, and was runnin' strong when I sold her. The 400 was a great transmission, the 350 was very weak, of course thats just my experience. Mine was in '78 GMC swb, 4x4. I used mine for a little fun, and a lot of heavy hauling.
Hope this helps
See ya'
