Bed removing Questions

How hard is it to take the box off my 1985 sierra classic? is it worth it and can it be done with just two people?

Re: Bed removing Questions

Not really hard. Unbolt it to the frame, disconnect fuel filler neck, and disconnect taillight wiring.

Two strong people might be able to do it. With only two people, I'd run 2x4's between the bed and frame and raise it up outside the wheels and drive the truck away from the bed.

Not sure about your "worth it" question...

Imho I wouldn't even try it with just 2 people 3 minimum. Also don't forget that ground wire coming off filler neck that attaches to underside of chassis.

If you have an engine lift hoist, you can do it yourself!!

Getting ready to do the same thing to my 73 stepside, but wood replacement. It does seeem all that difficult. Check out the LMC website and it shows you a detailed diagram for the bed of our truck all they way the down to the bolts and where they go and the entire lay out.
May I ask what is the reason you are taking the bed off for.

I've had the bed off mine four or five times (the last three by myself with the engine hoist).

Don't forget the axle vent line that attaches to the bed floor.

Not hard at all. I have done it several times with just my 13 yr old son and myself. Then I finally got my engine lift from a friends house and use it now, my bed comes off alot for cleaning and checking wiring and plumbing.

If you don't have an engine hoist, you can always do it my way-

I did it by myself. Lifting it with two people is hard. If you want to get it without scratching it, I would recommend four people. I like the engine lift idea.

I built the cab lift/bed lift that Kevin Lewis designed, man is it sweet. This way I can do it without buying beer and rounding up buddies:lol:

Because i need to get the rear end of the cab prepped for painting, and im thinkin about sandblasting the frame it so i can paint it also.

I took the beds of both of mine off by myself. They both were in the pre-body work stage. I just flipped them on their tailgates on some padding. Admittingly I asked for help to get by '63 bed in the house.

I was lurking in the pre 47 area today and saw this, I don't know why you could not modify the idea and make it work for the bed.
