uknown motor

Yes, The motor in my 1979 Jimmy is not the stock motor and I'm trying to find out what it is. The stamping on the front is V03020LY I did find a site that said that since it has 2 letters and not three that is is a pre-70. Is this true? What is under my hood?

Since I can't find a suffix code of LY for a SBC, I'm assuming it is a BBC. If so, my source says it is a 69 427, 335 HP, police version.

No it is indeed a small block, just not the 400 that was original in it. I was told it was a 350 but since i can't find proof I don't know. I'm thinking maybe it is V0302CLY instead of V03020LY, but even that is not in any of my books.

Fast68Chevy 02-15-2001 02:13 PM

Could it be CLP or CLK ??

Jimmy
Can you read the number that is cast in the block just below the back of the heads on the flat spot above where the bell housing bolts on? I think it's 8 or 9 digits long and will help narrow it down.

Jimmy4D 02-16-2001 07:37 PM

I took the distributor out and did some cleaning. The rear casting number is 3970010 so it is either a 68-69 327 or a 68-80 350. It has the date code, on the bell housing flange by the top center bolt of B187 which is Feb. 18th Im guessing 1977 so that makes it a 350. But the front is V0302CLY. I can't find a CLY in any car manual from 64-79. It is a car block.

My Book shows 3970010 to be one of two things. 69 302 z-28 camero OR 350 69-80
Good luck

Rob Dundrea 03-04-2001 02:54 PM

that block is a standard 2 bolt 350 block used in cars an truck from mid 70 to mid 80
till the went to 1 piece rear main seal in 86
it a good starting point for a healthy motor with siamesed bores you can take that thing 80 over w/ no problems.

I've owned 4 of these #0010 blocks, and every single one has been a 4-bolt main, odds are yours is also....

Its a '67-'79 block, for the '80 model year, the castings changed a little bit, and the dipstick tube was moved to the passenger side....
I dont know why Mortec lists it as an '80 also....
(There were 350 engines in '67 and '68, but only in the Camaro, though)

Good luck !

The motor has a 2 bolt main. The heads had 1978 stampings, the block was a 1977. It now has a RV 2 cam and was bored .030 over from the P/O. Everything but the heads was just finger tight. It was a nightmare but it is back together and hopefully running tomorrow by this time. Thanks for all the imput.

Goldigger 03-12-2001 02:38 AM

That is odd, every 010 block I have seen was a 4 bolt as well. As well as mine, hehe.

Fast68Chevy 03-12-2001 04:03 AM

Well, there were/are some 0010 blocks, but not many hehe...
I think if I was to build an engine(which I will again, and hopefully this year) and it cant be a sb400...... then I'm gonna find an '86 up 5.7L tbi/tpi block.
Gonna try the roller and improved rear crank seal out!

There were both 2 bolt and four bolt 350 blocks with the casting 3970010. I have 2 four bolts and 1 two bolt in my garage. All 010 blocks had a high-nickel content and are very strong casting (both 2 and 4 bolt). I've been running one for 5 years with a 6:71 blower (1:1 drive ratio) on the street. Can't seem to blow it up even though I've tried.
Oh, and the heads didn't come with that block. I'm fairly sure the last year of the 010 block was 1972.
