68 K10 SWB Frame Up

Got this for a graduation present when I got done with high school in 2006. I Started working on it myself and redid the whole passenger side (floor, cab corner, rocker panels, etc) and did a patch on the drivers side floor as well. With my job I didn't have time to work on it so I took it to where it came from, Hill Brothers Auto Body in Whitefish, MT, my hometown. Gene Hill and his crew have been working on it since, and its getting near completion. Wish I could say I did this all myself like some of you guys but I had to cheat. Here it is pretty much up to date. The tires and wheels are coming in on Tuesday. The hood just got put on yesterday but I don't have pics of that yet. The motor is ZZ4 350 turn key crate from Chevrolet. I put in a new transfer case which I got from Car Quest. It has a Vintage Air kit in it. Chrome steering column from LMC and a wood grain wheel from LMC. I am looking for a seat currently out of a wrecked tahoe to put in it. The gas tank is now a fuel cell which will be located in the rear of the frame. I think that's about it. Thanks for looking.

Got my rims in... RBP 94R's on Toyo MT 33X12.5X18s. I will be the first person to ever put these rims on this style of truck to my knowledge and it better stay that way! KMC's are overrated, and i'm not one to copy people. Installing them tomorrow night, then i'll get some more pics up. Rolling Big Power!!!

Nice looking truck, and nice wheels! I'm not real big on larger than 16" personally, but they still look very nice.:metal:

Re: 68 K10 SWB Frame Up

Definitely i've never owned any bigger than 16s... But they only make them in 17" and larger so I went with 18s. Thanks everyone for checking out my truck. The lug nuts will be in tomorrow, apparently you can't buy jack s*it in town anymore they have to order everything in!! More pics tomorrow...

I'm looking forward to see how those look on our body style. That wheel/tire combo cost you a pretty penny. I would love to run Toyo open country, but they are way out my price range. Looks great!

Neat build. Any info on the paint color? Looks real....different. Not quite a dark red/burgandy....looks like a pinch of orange tossed in?

Re: 68 K10 SWB Frame Up

Ridin High.... yeah they were not cheap. Around 3K for the tire/wheel combo. I figure if i'm doing it once i'm doing it right and not going to redo it. I like to be different and try out new stuff so I guess that costs money. Toyo tires are the best tires made in my opinion. The M-55 snow/traction tire is what my dad runs on all our vehicles, I believe we own over 20 sets of them. I am only a fan of the Toyo MT if it is on a gas, the diesels eat the s*it out of them so don't put them on a diesel no matter what they say!! My buddy's dad has a F350 powerstroke with 35" Toyo MT's and has like 10K miles on them and they're half worn out! So that should tell you something.... but he has 33" size on his jeep and they will last a lifetime, it's all about the torque.

As far as the paint Bad71.... it is a burnt orange color. The pictures don't really do it justice on how awesome it is in the sunlight. I just picked out a color from the PPG paint codes book and I don't even really know what it is to be honest with you. I could find out more but I just went out in the sun and picked out a paint color I liked, always been a fan of the burnt orange because it's not all that common. Thanks for looking!

Some pics with the wheels on. Not completely installed, kinda half way but enough to get some pics. Wanted to check for proper fitment, only one rub on the steering linkage but an easy fix. Have to drill the center caps for the front to fit the hubs but it'll look good still.

Re: 68 K10 SWB Frame Up

It has a wood bed. I am actually on my way out to work on the boards currently but wanted to get some pics up of the wheels. The bed is painted and ready for wood. I cut them 2 weekends ago with my dad's sawmill. We are loggers here in Montana and have a Woodmizer portable sawmill for the fun of it I guess you'd say. We logged a small job that had a log entry way that had been there for years and the guy wanted it taken down, so we brought the logs home. The wood is a very tight grained larch that has been dead for probably 40 years. From log to finished product hopefully in the next few hours. Will put up more pics of that this afternoon i'm sure.

boards look nice.. did you put the factory groove into them?

are you still running the stock axle or disc?

Haven't decided on the seat yet. The owner of the body shop where my truck is at has a '70 C10 that he has a custom leather seat in. It is a split bench with a fold down console. All tan leather and runs about $1400. He may sell it to me and buy a different one. If not I saw someone on here who took a seat ouf of a 05 tahoe and put in their truck and it looked awesome. The options are endless...

As far as the boards go. I cut the factory grove in them yes. I went on GMC Pauls to find the dimensions in order to cut them. I rough cut them on the saw mill then planed them down to what I needed. Cut them on the table saw and used a dado blade to get the groves correct. The close up of the one board is pretty cool. There were wood borers in the log and there are some cool holes and stuff in the boards.

The axle is original but has the updated disc brake kit. It came with it when I got the truck.

Here are some more pics. Thanks for looking everyone!

Here is the box, its hiding in my snowmobile trailer. After I cut the boards on the sawmill I had to let them dry out a bit because it rained about an inch the day I cut them. Now I can deliver the box and the boards back to the body shop so it can be put on!

Matt, no I didn't add the distress marks. The log was an old arch that has been dead for years. Must have had worms and ants and stuff in it at one point that did put all the marks in them. They bore around in logs and trees after they are dead. There is a restaurant near my town that has tables in it with boards like that but the worms had to have been about as big around as your fingers because the holes are huge! It looks sweet though!

Here are some more random shots I took the other day. The one is of the Vintage Air A/C unit that recently was put in. One is of the painless wiring kit, the motor, etc. etc. I have some more pics of when I redid the passenger side floor, rocker panels and such, I just need to scan them onto my computer because I have prints of them but I don't have them on the computer.

Man, your truck is coming along really nice. Like you said, You are doing this right. Learn from our builds and mistakes. I know that I would have done my first build completely different if I knew what I know now. I'm having to go back and redo somethings. Looks Great!

Re: 68 K10 SWB Frame Up

Thanks for the support guys, I am really happy with how everything is looking. I know that I want to do this thing right the first time because later on down the road I might not have the money to change it. I am only 22 so I don't have a house payment yet, although 4 years of college did set me back. Everything that has gone into this truck has been paid for by me so I have learned just how expensive this stuff is to pay for!

Whats next: I need to sandblast 3 of the bed rails that the wood bolts to and get them primered and ready to go, hopefully one of these nights this week i'll get to that. Might be awhile before I have anything new to put up.
