PROJECT LOW DOUGH -1967 shortbed

I had a jumbled mess of a build thread going on so I deleted it and I am now starting a new one. I just bought a 1967 Chevy shortbed. My first truck when I was 16 was a 68 short fleet so I am now drawn to these trucks. about 2 years ago I bought another 67 short but it was a rust bucket.. It was way to big of a project for me so I parted it off. I told myself I would not buy another truck for a long while. Then I ran across the truck while going to buy a paint gun I found on craigslist. I am planning on trying to paint my harley myself so I went to buy the gun. The truck was sitting in the driveway just down the road from the guy I was meeting about the paint gun. The truck was not tagged and looked like it had been sitting for some time. I kept driving but the next day I rode my harley over and tried to talk to the guy. He wasnt home but I did leave him a note to call me if he wanted to sell it. 3 days later I recieved a call from him. He wanted 2 grand to start off. I thought it was a little high since it had been sitting for 2 years. It wasnt in horrible shape. It was all there just not really finished. I looked at the truck 3 different times before finally talking him down to 1350 for the truck. The 2nd time looking at it I got stung by a yellow jacket in the hand.. I am allergic so my hand swelled up so big and I had to go to the hospital. My wife didnt know I was looking at a truck until this happened so I had to tell her. She said that she was glad I got stung haha. Anyway I did talk her into letting me get the truck. The day I was suppose to pick it up he called and mentioned that the title had a 200 dollar penalty since he had never put the truck in his name. He said he would throw in all his spare parts which included a 67 short stepside without fenders, power brake booster and master, ac outside unit, two wire looms, core support, and other misc. The truck bed was full of parts when I left his house. The truck ran but it was in bad shape. Tires were low, no gauges or lights, and no windsheild wipers. I had to drive it like 30 miles to a friends house that has offered to store it until I get it un good running shape. I left the guys house about 6pm or so and was off on the road. I notice a storm was to the south so I had to make decent time up there since i had no wipers.. I took back roads the whole way and basically prayed for my life since it had many rattles and wasnt in the best shape. haha. I did make it with about 5 min to spare before a down pour. It was a fun trip and i was thankful I made it. I am posting some pictures below of when I looked at it and when I brought it home. I have had it a few months now and I need to get this thread brought up to speed but this is a start.. I am excited to make this truck my own.. Its already come a long way and this board had been a great help so far.

Re: PROJECT LOW DOUGH -1967 shortbed

So I have done a little clean up on the truck. This truck was a mess and the more I dig the more I realize I have to do. I have the typical rust in the floors and above the windsheild. The truck has some interior electrical problems and the TH-350 is leaking. I think it just needs new seals...Its going to be a long slow road but I plan to try to learn and do as much of it myself as I can. I have not been around cars much but do know a little. I also love searching ebay and craigslist and this board for deals. Its my goal to make this truck cool for as cheap as possible. FIRST ORDER OF BUSINESS IS TO LOOSE THE 90's BED and get the orignal bed. I have already sold the bed..

Well the bed is off and gone.. I have some decent used SWB fleetside bedsides sitting in my garage soon to be installed but I am waiting to meet up with lolife99 to get my wood floor cross sills.
The bad news is that I have realized the PO had cut the frame to make it a long bed to a short bed.. The SPID in the glove box and the vin show the cab is a shortbed but the frame was from a long bed. OH well its going to get airrid anyway so I just wont feel as bad cutting it up.

I hope to get my transmission leak fixed this weekend as well as get my SWB bed installed. I wont have a floor in it yet but that will be good since i am still painting the frame and working on getting my air ride parts.

No but it's sure fast. I have thought about doing some autocross or running down the strip just for fun.

Re: PROJECT LOW DOUGH -1967 shortbed

Small update.
I went and picked up a sway bar with mounts that I got for 10 bucks. The rubber is shot but I will get new.

I could only get 20 out of the atm so I bought a gauge cluster for 10 bucks as well. Its just a standard one. but the lens was in great shape. I cleaned it up and put my new bezel on. I did not paint the needles because I am thinking of putting a camaro tach in it and plan to paint it then. I will post a pic tomorrow of the dash.

Re: PROJECT LOW DOUGH -1967 shortbed

Thanks.. I am asking for a Miller 140 for Christmas. (-: It will be fun to learn so rust does not scare me. If I get stuck or mess up I can ask questions or send it to someone that knows how to do it... I live like 5 miles to from classic parts so it will be easy to get patch panels.

Well here is the pic of the dash.. I was going to try to put a camaro tach in it soon but I just bought a new bench seat so that will have to wait a bit. I plan to paint t he needles when I put the tach in.

Re: PROJECT LOW DOUGH -1967 shortbed

I made some progress yesterday. I put my swb fleetside together and installed it on the truck. Its bolted on tight but its not really aligned. It also is sitting low because the wood is not in the bed. I also installed my new bench seat that I bought from lolife99 and also got my new dash installed. I still need to mount the wiper and choke and light switch right but its in there anyway. I also bought some clear markers for the taillights.. I realized I dont have the tailgate hardware so I could not get my tailgate installed. After getting the bed on I realized the PO did not cut the back have of the frame from when it was a long bed. I ended up cutting some off.. It looks like it will all mount up right but i still need to drill the holes for the rear two bed bolts.
As you can see the bedside I got need some work but oh well atleast its a true 67 truck now. I hated the 90's model bed.
As you can see i still need to finish painting the frame and I need to do the bed cross sills but its a start.

Re: PROJECT LOW DOUGH -1967 shortbed

thanks guys.. I am really happy with it. The seat is so much better too. The other one was sitting to low so I felt like a little kid driving it.. Now it sits like a truck should. I feel like its coming together some what. I hope to get my new hood, tailgate and the trans leak buttoned up in a week or so and be on the road cruising around. It will be nice to actually drive the thing a little.. Atleast before i tear into it to do the body work which there is going to be a ton of. The air ride will be fun too.

Where did you happen to find those bedsides?

Re: PROJECT LOW DOUGH -1967 shortbed

A local guy..named BOB.. They are not in the greatest shape. The lowers need to be replaced and one wheel arch. I know a guy that has a set that has some rust in the wheel arch but other than that they are okay.. if you are looking for some.. I think he was wanting like 400 though.

Re: PROJECT LOW DOUGH -1967 shortbed

Well I got alot done on the truck... Sorry no pictures but I just was going to update this and ask a question for everyone. I spent the last two days working on changing the oil in the engine and trying to fix the transmission leak I had. The trans was leaking at the pan and at the speed cable insert. It also didnt have the kick down cable and had some other issues. I changed the gasket and put rtv silicone on it. I also tried fixing the speedo cable issue. Anyway all said and done.. spent close to 100 bucks getting all the oils and gaskets and kickdown cable. I got to drive it around a little last night which was fun but I went back out to fix some electrical issues today and realized both areas still leak.. Pretty frustrated at this point. It also seemed last night it was shifting into 2gear almost as fast as I stepped on the gas.. Weird..

My question is does anyone have any pointers or a nice th350 they would part with.. I am tempted to just buy a good used one and start fresh.. There seems to be so many things wrong with this one it might be easier to just get one I know is good.. I would be interested in a 700r4 as well.

On a good note. I did get alot done the last two days.. I seemed to have fixed my heater.. Its now turning on.. I also fixed my brake lights and got the rear bumpstops off. I also installed my new hood and steering wheel. It looks much better.. I also got the rusted inner fenders out and took it to the car wash and power washed the front end.. It does have black paint.. Most of it has fallen off but it looks much better.

Anyway i will post some pics of he truck as soon as I can. Let me know if anyone has any suggestions on the tranny.. Pretty bummed about it. I just want to be able to drive this thing and that is what is holding me back.

Re: PROJECT LOW DOUGH -1967 shortbed

I'll keep you in mind on the tranny bguild... sorry to hear about the leak problems. I have a few on my inline I need to tend to but that will be a winter project.
