Plastic and Die Cast Trucks
 

Here’s a shot of my 60-66 truck fleet. The one in the top center was built years ago using a Modelhaus resin replica of an original kit, combined with the newly released (at the time) Revell stepside/boat kit. The other two 1/25th trucks are a combination of Revell kits with AMT and Modelhaus parts. Sadly the molds wore out and Modelhaus no longer offers the GMC parts. The black 1/32nd kit is a cheap friction toy. The two 1/43rd 1960 diecast trucks came as a set titled “First Strike” or something like that. One came painted and the other is a bare assembled casting. The black rig in the same scale came with a long Mr. Gasket trailer.

And I picked this up this morning at Walmart. The bed will be cut off for a swap to the black fleetside.

I’ve always thought the 73 stepside bed looked like what the factory should have provided in 1960 when these trucks were new. We’ll see how it turns out in 1/64th.

And here’s the first mock up. It all fit together reasonably well after some cutting and grinding. A bit of adjusting, some paint and maybe new wheels should take care of it.

markeb01, your GMCs look good. I have a couple of those Modlehaus GMC kits I bought years ago. I should build them. I even have a couple original 60s Chevys I bought to convert them.

I guess we don't know how good we have it until it's too late. I have one remaining spare GMC grille and a pile of 64-66 Chevy kits so I might use it to build one of those. I thought about creating a "stock" version of my real 1960 GMC which was yellow with white wheels (using an AMT 60 kit), but the project died when I discovered the hood is no longer offered. I called Modelhaus and they explained the molds were just too old and worn out, had very little demand, and since the parts don't fit the new kits they weren’t interested in making repairs. Too bad, I’ve had a lot of people ask where I got the GMC parts, wanting to build their own.

It would certainly be easier to convert an original 60’s Chevy to a GMC (using the Modelhaus parts) since the original and resin parts were the same scale (slightly larger) than the “new” Revell and AMT kits. The resin kit with the GMC hood was very difficult to complete and took over a year, not because it was resin but because I wanted the doors and front clip mated to the roof and the back of the cab from a Revell 64-66 kit. I don’t think the GMC hood would fit very well on a current kit without a lot of work. Good for you having the foresight to get your parts when they were still being produced.

I could not remember what I bought (I got them about 15 years ago), so I dug them out. I have two differant ones. The GMC lettering is differant on them.

Interesting they made the parts for all versions. Both the 60-61 and 62-66 hoods, and both grilles. The 2nd style with the square letters was 1966 only. I can see why they haven't been built yet, with all the other cool stuff in your collection.

Thought I sold this a few years ago. Found it in a box with some other diecat stuff the other day. It is from the early 60s.

add a few dents, twists, serious rust and it will look like my stuff that I grew up with. Pennsylvania winters were hard on all vehicles, real and diecast :lol:

I'm curious, does that have a manufacturer name cast in the bottom? It looks like a Tootsietoy or something similar, although I've never seen a truck version like that before.

The truck is a Hubbly. It is a little smaller than your gold and orange 61s.

Hi - I just saw the set on E-bay like yours, where one is painted and one is not. It is called before & after. Very cool. Limited edition too!
