Inline six
I have a 69 GMC I am starting to work on again. I am trying to decide what motor to put in it. I sold the motor and trans a few years ago, because I was short on money. I thought about puting an inline six in it with a holley 4.3 throttle body I had lying around. I found a link on youtube where a guy did this and it sounds pretty good, . Are these motors known to be reliable? I found one for sale for 150 bucks, still in the truck so I can hear it run. I thought about putting the throttle body and some headers on where I can run dual pipes. What do yah'll think? The truck will be used as a second vehicle and to haul some wood.

Re: Inline six
I am not really a 6 guy but they are about as good as it gets . The tbi idea is a good one it shuold make for some good economy as well as power. Put in an overdrive and your wood hauler would get some good mileage as well.Jim

Re: Inline six
I have a 250 inline and its a beast....hasn't ever been rebuilt and runs awesome.

Re: Inline six
I agree on the 250. You can't kill one.

Re: Inline six
better yet get a 292:lol: if u can grab that 200r as they have a good gear spread that match well for the inline 6's plus good OD i'm told (no personal experience). guess 700r4 1-2 gap leaves something to be desired behind a 6.

Re: Inline six
The 235 was pre- '63. Old school and heavier than the later 230/250/292 series. The only disadvantage from owning an L6 , especially a 292, is that you get awful rusty about rebuilding and installing engines.

Re: Inline six
One other thing to remember on a 6 is that rebuild and replacement parts are much more$$$ than for a smallblock.I like the 6 myself but you can just about double the cost of any performance part over that for the SBC.The performance is fine for cruising but to make big power costs big bucks. The TBI would be a great upgrade but make sure you get everything when you do it.The harness, electronics and such will really drive the price up if you don't.Good luck and we need pics!!!

Re: Inline six
As everyone has said, the 250/292 inline 6 is a great engine. But do realize that stock it makes it's power down low, so keep that in mind when you think about how you want to drive it.
I'm currently putting a 4.3 TBI setup using a Megasquirt controller and installing an S10 T-5 5 speed for daily driving and light hauling. What kind of ECU/controller are you looking to install? Good luck! |
Re: Inline six
I already have a Holley TBI unit and a stock computer. I am going to check with some junkyards and see how much they want for their engine harnesses. If their over a hundred I will get one off ebay from fuelinjectionconnection for $245. I like the idea for the S10 transmission.
