I built my truck...

I've had a model around for years. Couple weeks ago I was trying out my detail spray gun (for the garage) and had a sample of the paint I am planning for my C-10 (GM 511 turquoise poly) and decided the model would be a good place to check it out.

Everyone (wife and kids) approved of the color. This weekend I had some time and decided to work on the kit. I did a simple car kit a couple weeks back as kind of a practice job, but it really didn't need much for paint.

The 72 fleetside kit is molded in white and everything needs painted. Anyway, it went together pretty good, with just a few glitches. The kit was bought as an opened one from somewhere and there were a few pieces missing, I'll get to that later. So here it is, minus wheels...

This is the most detail I've ever tried on a model. Got the wheel rim painted, found a color that will closely match my intended interior color. It looks blue in the pics, but is actually a teal or aqua color. The only thing I wish I had done better is the gages, but I tried, and that counts for something...

I thought I did ok on the engine detail...

I think the lights turned out ok...

I used some grey in the grill and wiped off the ridges to give it a more realistic look. But I did not try to do the black around the edge.

Re: I built my truck...

As for the missing parts, I had 3 of the stock style tire, 4 of the performance tires (but the rear wheel backs for these tires). I didn't really care for the spoke style wheels they included. The hubcap style wheels are ok, but I don't have the right wheel back to use them on the performance tires. And I thought the performance tires were just too small when I mocked them up, even with the front spindles in a lowered position. Missing the radiator hose and gas cap also. I will probable just fill the gas cap hole though.

Anyone know where I can find some turbo fan style wheels? I'm thinking General Lee, but there may be others. Also looking for some fatter tires. Something similar to a 275-60-15, which will match my real truck better.

Sure, just like this one, except for paint, interior, etc.

Looks like the general lee wheels are the wrong style. I'll have to keep looking.

That's some good detail. What I hate about the re-issues is they no longer come with whitewalls, like these trucks should have. I searched high and low to find some. They go by the trends at the time of re-issue.

Re: I built my truck...

I have found that if you take a little sand paper to the contact surface of your tire tread. Not the side wall! It will remove the fakey shinny plastic look from your model's tire tread. As if the tires have a few miles on them. It adds that little extra detail to help it look more real.

BTW, I like it. Nice color.

Not really. I found a set on ebay but the guy anted like $19 plus shipping just for the wheels and he didn't know what they were off from. I found a similar set that were on a jeep model, but haven't found the right model yet. Still looking.

Thanks for looking. I actually found some I'm going to use today at Hobby Lobby. I was just scanning the models looking at the wheels and found this...

12 spoke wheels

Re: I built my truck...

Got the wheels on, but wasn't a direct fit. Different manufacturers of models and different sizes of tires/wheels means I couldn't just slip those wheels into the tires from the original kit. Mounting was different, etc. but I got them on it eventually. I got the grill bowtie painted and installed and also the door mirror. So here is the comparison with a shot of my real truck.

PM me your mailing info and I'll send 'em your way. I'm not sure what I have as far as tires go but I'll dig something up for you.

I attempted to build some models when I was in hs but, I NEVER got anywhere close to the detail that yal achieve. You all have quite the skill with models I must say. Props on the replica build. Have you considered painting the inside of the model bed gray to further match the real truck?

Re: I built my truck...

^^ This is cool - I am doing the same thing with my Mercury Comet (I know, wrong forum, lol) - but were are talking models here so I'll push it.

Like the OP, I have found it a pretty cool and even fun way to experiment - you can do wheels, side pipes, ride heights, interior and of course paint colors/designs.

Good stuff, and OP, that model is pretty darn close!

Re: I built my truck...

Anyone know if a 1969 chevy c10 kit is available? And a 1949 chevy 3100?

Thanks!
