What does your sound system look like?
 

Hey all,
As some of you may know, my Blazer is in the body shop and is on its last leg to completion. Once it gets back the first thing to go in is the sound system. Right now I have 2 6" speakers for the doors and 2 6x9's for the back all mated to a Pioneer head unit. As a 16 year old, I want it loud, but I'm stumped on how to do it and make it look good at the same time. Preferably, I would like a a sub/amp combo along with what I already have. I had an idea to buy a set of rear interior panels without the coverings someone was making custom on here, then cut the holes for the speakers and mount the amp on the bedside behind the panels. Then cover them. What have you guys done to install subs and amps? Pics are appreciated.:chevy:

Lets see it's got a small block of steel pushing sound out of dual tubes into some decent sized boxes that exit towards the rear of the blazer. Sounds really good.

Oh you meant stereo. Just a pioneer deck with a couple of good 6x9's in boxes mounted to my roll cage behind the front seats. Not great but it's tunes, and I tend to leave it off most of the time to listen to the stereo mentioned above.

On a side note it could really use some door speakers or other place up front, but like you have not found a clean/easy way to do it.

A buddy of mine has kick panels that fit under the air vents in the foot well for six inch speakers. Really slick but my roll cage is in the way.

I made simple 1/4" plywood door panels and side panels. I covered them with black vinyl and used the pre '71 arm rests. I cut the front panels for 4" coaxials, this allows me to go back to the '72 OEM panels if I want with no apparent mods to the door.

In the rear, I put 6" coaxials in the side panels about a foot behind the drivers seat. I have a single 12" sub in rear in an approximate 1 cu ft sealed box. I have a Kicker 5 channel amp (5x4, 190x1). I made an amp mounting board out of the same 1/4" plywood and covered with vinyl. It bolts through the floor underneath the rear seat. This allows you to change/add hardware and you just use wood screws without any more holes in the truck.

The board setup has been there 20 years, but the amp/crossover setup has changed several times over the years. Current head unit is an Alpine DIN style unit with USB input.

Really slick idea I think. I'm also doing the kick panel speakers (custom build by myself) and a nice speaker array including subs in the rear side panels. The rear speaker inclosure's will be custom built and mounted within the quarters and the panels will just fit over the grills.

I really don't want to cut holes in the metal and the rear side panels can be replaced if need be. Either way my head unit will be mounted in the center console and amps under the drivers seat.

Just a few idea's for ya to ponder.....

Sounds pretty good for what it is...
Speakers: Polk marine grade 6x9s in rear panels, 4"s in console,
Head unit: Sony marine cd with plug for MP3 in front & USB in back.
Amp: mounted under console, I think it's a Kenwood, just one laying around the shop, have no idea what size.

Wish I knew more about audio stuff & how to match things up. It seems hard to get great sound running topless & all the wind noise without spending big $. I have friends with a nice boat that they spent around $2k on its system & I think my Blazer sounds better than it, so I'm happy as i only have about $400 in it all!

I think I saw those kick panels in an LMC catalog. I think I'll look into those. The amp under the driver's seat is a pretty good idea too, has anybody done it with stock seats? That just leaves the sub, any good ideas here fellas?

I didnt want to cut my dash either . I found a custom autosound retro raido at a swap meet, added eclipse 6x9's in rear panel ,I also install a 12 shallow mont RF sub w/ 200 watt amp . The panels took a while to make especially trying to build a small enuff enclosure for the sub that would wedge between the panel and bed . I also put in some kick panels from LMC. the system sounds pretty decent, but not up to my standard ( not enuff air space for the sub to hit like it should . but I didnt want speaker boxes everywhere , I like the clean look , notice the interior lights, mag lite, extinguisher just in case..pics included

Looks pretty good big time. Can you pull those panels to put the top on or off? I was thinking of putting the sub behind the console. Any idea?

Yeah, I have to loosen 6 screws on each side to take top on/off, but thats part of the job w/ a double wall . Doesnt take but a few minutes , just make sure you leave enuff slack in your wiring , and have to incorporate the sub enclosure to panel , alot easier to take top on/ off than I anticipated. I believe their are a few members that have built consoles w/subs built in , but I tried to keep my console original it was in too good of shape to set on a shelf.

i have 2- 6inch rounds under dash,2-6x9s in the doors and 2-12' subs in the back....works for me!

That looks awesome, bigblock68. How does the sub sound? Bigtime didn't seem too impressed due to the lack of air space. I'm most likely doing the same but only if it's worth it. I've been considering a bazooka bass tube too..

Bigblock, are those panels a custom job? It seems like the best way to go is to incorporate them into the rear panels. Can you buy just the coverings?

i built these panels ...,pretty straight forward,although i had it pretty much planned out before paint.i welded 1-1/2" angle on both ends and added tabs so i had good mounting points.i used flat carriage bolts in the wood and thumb screws nuts behind the amps and speakers so there are no visible mounting screws.....i like the clean look : ) as for the upholstery,i have a hook up...my mom has an upholstery business,she has the same taste i do with this so it makes things pretty easy for me..

I bought a off brand CD/DVD AM/FM, unit with a 5 1/2" touch screen. It fits in the single din dash cut out. The screen hangs down instead of up like most of them, that way it doesnt hit the dash pad. I only paid $300 for it and it even has BlueTooth! The Blue Tooth is cool because I can listen to my ipod touch wirlessly with the Blue Tooth while camping or whatever and play all the albums on it and control the volume for about 60 feet away from the truck, it also connects my cell phone and turns the music down and shows who's calling when I get a call. I also have an XM receiver hooked up to the head unit. I ran the XM cable through the upper cab following the dome lamp wire, I drilled a small hole in the top of the cab so you cant see the wire going to the XM antenna. I have a rear view camera mounted in the liscence plate bracket next to the plate, when I put it in reverse the screen shows what the camera sees.
It also takes USB drive and SD cards. I mounted a pair of 6" Dayton Reference midrange drivers in the door, I used these because they sound much better than all the ridiculous priced, terribly built crap you get from Crutchfield or the likes. I used a pair of 1" aluminum surface mount tweeters above the AC ball vents and a pair of 10" cheapo Sony subs mounted in small ported boxes under the seat. I mounted two amps, one SSL, 4 channel 150 watt amp for the mids and tweets and a 1000 watt 2 channel SSL amp for the subs in the area behind the passenger seat. I mounted the amps to a painted piece of 1/2 particle board so I can easily pull them out if I need to.
I couldnt find any grills that would really protect the 6" Dayton drivers in the door so I made some out of aluminum, I cut out some bars and spaced them out with some little aluminum spacers.
