Considering an s10 2.2
My current 87' silverado, is a great truck. But I'm considering taking it off my daily driver status. I was originally considering a small car, like a corolla, but I realized I am single, don't need a 5-seat, and plan on not crossing over to the car side
Seems like all the mini trucks are pretty decent. My first truck was an 87' ranger with the 2.9 v6, never had problems with it. I want a 4 cyl though for maximum fuel mileage. I don't plan on hauling much and will just use it for commuting. 4 cyl manual is what I want. Tacoma seems like a great truck, but super over-priced! I like the old nissan hardbody trucks as well. How is the s10 94+ with the 2.2? Reliability? Gas Mileage? Certain years to look for? |
Re: Considering an s10 2.2
I haven't heard anything horrible about them, but these are the things to look out for:
-valve cover gasket leaking -head gasket leaking (or head crack) - only if overheating is or has been an issue. -the fitting on the hard coolant line that wraps around the passenger side of the engine and plugs into the thermostat housing often corrodes As far as fuel mileage, they were rated at City 23/Hwy 29 |

Re: Considering an s10 2.2
I would recommend one! I have a 68 C20 I used as a DD and my 6 MPG just wasn't cutting it for my anymore. I've been around S10's a lot for a while and the 2.2 is very bullet proof if taken good care of. The issues listed above are very correct and good to look out for. I just bought a 98 S10 2.2 auto. Put a air intake on, electric fan, 180* t-stat, and cut out the cat. I got 35 highway, 22 city, and 27 combined. I drive pretty conserativly in my S10 but it pays off at the pump.

Re: Considering an s10 2.2
If you take care of it, they will run for a very long time.
I have a 4cyl auto truck. It has been very good to me, I have put 85K miles on it (just rolled 100K) and have not done much other than preventative maintenance. A couple things to look out for: Head gasket, cracked/warped head if it overheats Plastic radiator tanks have a tendancy to crack TIming chains - the GM chain is the best one, aftermarket seems to cause issues For some reason, my truck will not get out of the low 20s for mileage (doesn't matter if I granny or flat-foot it). If I were to do it all over again, I would probably get a V6 truck, their mileage is about on par with what I get now, and it has a lot more power. I can give you a very good site for S10s if you're interested. |
