Re: Operation Short Bed
Dakota Wentz, grandson of Darryl Starbird, did a series in Custom Classic Truck magazine that was titled "Get Shorty". In the series, he took a LWB and made a SWB. Lots of good info. Haven't seen the finished truck, but would like to. I think he still contributes to the truck rags.

Here is that link and the other link that we used while doing this project.

Re: Operation Short Bed
Well here is my 1972 Chevrolet C10 LWB My father and I bought it back in 2001 for $100 (yes I am serious). Then we started rebuilding the motor and restoring the truck. It was about 85% done when I finally made the call to make it a SWB. That is what I really wanted in the first place, but in South Texas where I was stationed at the time you can't find them anywhere.

Re: Operation Short Bed
Let the cutting begin. First took eight inches off the back of the frame.

Re: Operation Short Bed
Now time to cut the 12 inches from the front of the frame.

Re: Operation Short Bed
The frame is cut and the Truck in two pieces. Damn that was a scary site.

Re: Operation Short Bed
Now time to start Squaring it back up and tack the frame back together.
http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y12...IMG_0283-1.jpg http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y12...s/IMG_0296.jpg http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y12...IMG_0284-1.jpg http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y12...s/IMG_0309.jpg http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y12...s/IMG_0303.jpg |
Re: Operation Short Bed
More Welding the frame back together.
http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y12...s/IMG_0310.jpg http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y12...s/IMG_0304.jpg http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y12...s/IMG_0305.jpg http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y12...s/IMG_0307.jpg http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y12...s/IMG_0312.jpg |

Re: Operation Short Bed
Now time to remove the Crossmember and move it 8 inches forward. Those huge rivets were no match for a little heat and a Air Chisel.
http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y12...s/IMG_0318.jpg |
Re: Operation Short Bed
looking good, what are you using to brace it after?
|
Re: Operation Short Bed
Crossmember moved forward and rewelded in place.
http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y12...s/IMG_0355.jpg http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y12...s/IMG_0357.jpg Now showing the Reinforced plates that we welded on the frame. http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y12...s/IMG_0361.jpg http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y12...s/IMG_0360.jpg Also we had to move the brake line just went to AutoZone and bought a 30 inch brake line and made the bends. We were able to use the existing mounting brackets and holes. http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y12...s/IMG_0362.jpg |
Re: Operation Short Bed
Well there it is the frame is reinforced, welded, and suspension reconnected. Surprisingly not that bad of a job to do.
http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y12...s/IMG_0351.jpg Now that I have pressure washed the frame time to wire brush it, prime, and I am going to put Rubberized undercoating on the frame. http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y12...s/IMG_0366.jpg |
