Newbie questions about 1998 S10 reliability
 

Excuse the newbie questions, but I want to know about reliability of a 1998 S10? I'm looking at a used S10 5 speed with 188K miles for $2,500. What problems have you S10 owners seen? Is this a reasonable price?

What kind of engine is in it, if its a 4.3 liter your getting probrolly one of the most reliable engines next to the sbc, basicly just a small block with two less cylinders, the 4.3 were roller motors from the start of manufacture and you would just be running into similar problems like the small block. s10s in general tend to get cancer fairly easily so make sure when you find rot, clean it and fix it, doesnt take much to make them rot away. But you shouldnt nhave to worry with a 98. You got a nice s10 i can say, any pics??:metal:

I have 96 with 214900+ miles and still running strong. I've put a few $ into it through. Major replacement items: updated FI spider, complete front suspension bushing replacement, fuel pump, transmission, radiator (changed during FI spider upgrade to ditch Dexcool), A/C compressor, water pump, power steering pump, cat, muffler, intake gaskets and heater core.

Ask if any of the above items have been replaced.

They're great little trucks, but price varies greatly on 4.3 or 2.2 as well as 2WD or 4x4 and cab configuration.

The front end will probably need bushings and ball joints, I do ball joints at 100K on late model trucks for piece of mind.

I have owned several in all configurations. Never had a problem out of any of them. Maintained them and drove them. 2 of them I used while I drove doing pizza delivery. Ton's of miles on them, did regular maintenance and they took care of me. Reliable in my books.

Oh, and a traded a 94 ZR2 that ran like a top with 165k on it for a 2001 S10 single cab 2.2l 5 speed with 240k on it. Runs like a dream, doesn't dog thru the hills in 5th gear. I was amazed. Gave it to my mom, she loves it. No issues from it yet.

I bought a 98 in Sept. with a 110k.... It's been a electrical nightmare! Good engine though.

I have a 99 4.3 , 5 spd , 2 wd , extra cab . Great little truck . 174 k on it . It my daily driver for work . Cold ac , hot heat . Great on gas to . It's rust free , but could use a paint job . A lot of scratches from the previous owners . It is a keeper for sure !
