700R4 in a 67 pickup

Do you have to change out the stock cross member to run a 700r4 Tranny? The truck had a TH400 in it originally. Thanks for any help with this.

You should have no problems mounting the 700R4 with that crossmember. You will however, have to move it to a different location on the frame rails. I am planning the same with my 68 short 454 truck that is currently under construction. P.S. Don't forget to get the tv cable adjusted properly or it could be bad news[ if you have'nt had one before] .Jim

I left the crossmember in the stock location, and just added a plate to move the mount to the new location. Mine had a TH400 originally as well.

Thanks for the info. That will be helpful. When I put one in my Sons 64 Shortwide I had to get a different crossmember and it was kinda spendy so Im glad I dont have to be out that money.

Two things to think about...
  • the top bolts on a stock crossmember to frame are a pain to remove and replace, drilling new holes up there is not easy.
  • accessing the rearward pan bolts on the 700r4 is very difficult if not impossible on stock crossmembers.

For $40 or so a CPP tubular crossmember is a good deal if the above are important to you. It bolts on the bottom flange of the frame only and allows access to pan bolts.

Thats a really good point, and being that I like to do my own oil changes I would probably be kicking myself later. Thanks for the info.

Porterbuilt has a nice tubular crossmember too. Great guys to work with and less a headache than CPP. Go with porterbuilt.
