400 flywheel ?

I have a 79 good running 400 small block to put in my 72 K10 SWB Chevy and I have an sm465. I will need a flywheel for it for the 400. Since they didn't put in 400s in 72 in these trucks what year or type should I get? I am guessing any 12" flywheel off of some mid 70's truck would work. Will it be like finding hens teeth? I can get a new one if I have to. What do you think?

hens teeth

ive been looking for one for my 400, and sinse the 400 is an externally balanced motor, you have to find a weighted flywheel... and sinse very few, if any, 400s ever came hooked to a manual, there harder then heck to find

If you can find a circle dirt track in your area, try talkin to them. I don't know what class or anyting laike that, but I hear many of them do the 400 small block/4 speed deal.

this is what the dirt track racers do:

(i asked my friend that races when i first started looking)

or you can get an aluminum flywheel from summitracing.com, but its about $230ish

I just bought a new externally balanced flywheel for a 454 from Northern in Sioux City, Ia. for $110. I don't have a catalog in front of me, but I wouldn't think one for a 400 would be much diff in price. If intersted I can get the phone # tom.

great, thanks. I asked at auto zone ( I know but I stopped on a whim) and I checked for a 79 3/4 ton truck with a 4 speed and it was about a buck fifty.

I got mine out of a 79 GMC Jimmy.

sb 400 only on that flywheel....used are hard to find! I am running a hays billet 400 sb flywheel on my 383($229 through jegs). As posted by hobby67stepside, you can get a stock replacement 400 sb flywheel through Northern autoparts for $110. It will be a 14" diam ,168 tooth ring gear, & accept an 11", or 12" clutch setup. You might check to be sure that the holes are drilled & tapped on the block for the clutch pivot ball, as most of the 400sb's were auto trans. Good luck, crazyL:burnout:

crazy longhorn, thanks. I didn't even think to check for the pivot ball hole. The Engine is out of the 79 Sierra Grande in my signature. I'll check it this weekend.

I have a bud that ran into the pivot ball issue, while installing a 400 in a camaro with a 4 spd. He said the bosses were there, but needed to be drilled & tapped.......but didnt find out till it was in the car(Oops!) Good luck, crazyL:burnout:
