Modified Brake Pedal for A/T
4 Attachment(s)
I'm sure this has been done before, but I thought it would be nice to modify my brake pedal to make it a little more useful for both feet. The 73+ trucks had a wider pedal option for automatic transmissions, but all the brake pedals on the 67-72 trucks were the narrow ones that could be used with a clutch pedal or not.
So I already had an old pedal pulled from a 72 truck and I had an old 80 Camaro pedal for an A/T (any 1st or 2nd Gen Camaro would work), so I thought I'd give it a shot. The main reason I chose the Camaro pedal is that you can get the Disc Brake medallion pad and the chrome trim that fairly well matches the bright trim option on CST Blazers. Here are some pics during the process. I'm still waiting on the chrome trim and still need to paint the pedal before I put it in. |

I'll add more pics once I get it cleaned up and installed.

Re: Modified Brake Pedal for A/T
Not trying to piss on your wheaties, but what is the point of a wider pedal if it is no closer to the gas pedal? I can see that this would help if you drove with two feet (one on brake and one on gas), but most people drive an automatic with one foot. Just curious.

Re: Modified Brake Pedal for A/T
Looks good! I was planning something similar on my 67 but I'm already tired of the slush-box so I'll be rehanging my cluth pedal...
I like the way you beefed up the back of the pedal. |

Re: Modified Brake Pedal for A/T
I drive with two feet, and have wanted a wider pedal ever since getting my truck:metal:

Nice job. I've been wanting to do this also to the 71 and just haven't took the time to. Great job!;):chevy:

Re: Modified Brake Pedal for A/T
Nice mod, i've always thought they should have put a wider brake pedal in the automatic trucks from the factory, like they did with the 73-up trucks. The narrow pedal just doesn't look right to me. I have an auto and i drive with both feet, without a working choke you have to. Kinda funny to watch me drive my girlfriends 06 Durango with two feet though, doesn't work so well! Joseph

Re: Modified Brake Pedal for A/T
Even if you don't drive with two feet, the wider pedal would be more reassuring to stomp on with both feet in an emergency.

Re: Modified Brake Pedal for A/T
Can you just use the later pedal or do you have to do the welding? Looks nice though.

Re: Modified Brake Pedal for A/T
Thanks for the comments guys.
I like the wider pedal for a few reasons. - If you're running a carb, there are times when you need to use the gas pedal a little at a stop light to keep it running (especially when the motor's still cold). So the wider pedal helps to use both feet. - To me, the wider pedal just looks better than the stock pedal and fills up the footwell a bit. The stock pedal looks like someone just cut off the clutch pedal when they converted to an auto trans. Anyway, it's presonal preference and I was just sharing something I did. |

Re: Modified Brake Pedal for A/T
Looks awesome. I have done this retro to other vehicles in the past. I definatly know about brake and gas with one foot on these carb'd motors when cold. I have to do it everyday.

Re: Modified Brake Pedal for A/T
Very cool. I've never liked the little brake pedal in these blazers with an automatic. Just looks out of place to me, like the clutch pedal is missing
I also don't like how close the brake pedal is to the gas pedal, so I heated up the rod and bent mine over about 1 1/2 inches. That little modification alone made it much easier to use your left foot. It's a noticable difference if you have big feet ;) I like the wider pedal idea. I may just have to do that to mine now. Thanks for giving me even more work to add to my list  |
Re: Modified Brake Pedal for A/T

The trim for my pedal came in yesterday so I put it in. Here are a few before and after pics. I really like the way it came out.

Nice mod.I like it.Where do you get the trim and rubber at?And nice e-brake release knob

Re: Modified Brake Pedal for A/T
I bought the brake pad and trim from Classic Industries, but I'm sure any 1st or 2nd Gen Camaro parts suppliers would have them. Here are the part numbers from Classic.

Re: Modified Brake Pedal for A/T
I want one too. You wanna make a couple bucks on the side?

Re: Modified Brake Pedal for A/T
Does the brake pedal arm come out with relative ease? Or is it a pain?
I looked at mine, appears it's on a shaft of sorts and may come out without taking the whole booster/master cylinder loose from the firewall. Any details on that would be great. I'm ready to pull mine and start welding, I have spare brake pedals here in my stash from stripping other cars. |
