4L60E Neutral Safety Switch

1 Attachment(s)
I have a 4L60E transmission and the switch on the gear selector only has 1 big connector instead on 2 connectors. I was hoping that someone has an idea on which wires are used for the Neutral Safety Switch and what wires are used for the reverse light. I have 5 wires (of the around 10 wires that are on the connector) that come from the switch , 2 pinks, 1 gray, 1 light green and 1 dark green wire. Any info would be great. These are the last wires that need to be connected. I attached a picture of the switched that I have.

Thanks in advanced, Robert

I have the wiring diagrams for the harness converson from LT1Swap.com, but unless I missed that part, I can not find the diagram for the harness plug that I have. From what I have read the computer needs to see what gear the transmission is in, so I don't want to bypass it and put a different type of neutral safety and reverse light switch in it. I will go through it and check again. Thanks for the info.

knowing the switch would go from P to R to N and so on.....could you just get a multi-meter and tone it out?

why not just get the right switch.. that is a newer version, while the two connector type was an older style....

The wiring harness that came with the engine was made for the 1 connector. I purchased the one that was made for the wiring harness.
Thanks for the suggestion.

I did use a meter to find what pin does what but I'm not sure if I need to hook up the pink wires to a switched power source. I'm not sure if one of the pink wires will feed the neutral safety portion or the reverse or both. Not sure if the swith needs power to send signals to the computer. Thanks for the suggestion I will put some lower voltage to the pinks and check the wires at the computer and the wires that I have extra.:chevy:

What did you do for a neutral safety switch and for the reverse light? How does your computer sense weither your in park or drive? Thanks for any info?

I am wondering, do you even need that switch? I can understand if you want it. But does it have to be there to make the computer function right?

I'm not sure if it is needed for the computer to work. I did read that the computer needs to see what gear the trans is in for the proper idle. Another issue is if the pink wires need to be connected the a 12 volt switched power. I may just get a column mount neutral safety and reverse light switch. :chevy:

Re: 4L60E Neutral Safety Switch

There should be a wire from the PCM that goes to the steering column neutral safety switch.

The switches on the 4L80E recognizing P vs N are not used in the set-up I have.

Re: 4L60E Neutral Safety Switch

If my memory serves me there is two styles as mentioned. I know my tranny guy told me not to buy the neutral safety switch until I got my harness ordered. I think 98-02 was one type then 03+ was another. This maybe your problem

Re: 4L60E Neutral Safety Switch

This is important for the computer to know the trans is in gear for idle and shifting properly. It works without it, but is better with it properly connected.
I am currently running my truck without it connected in limited use and the idle will sometimes drop to 400 before the PCM picks it back up to keep it from stalling in gear.

Some day i'll find the 1 plug style connector I need to hook mine up so I can take it on a nice long drive without worries about frying the trans, or stalling, etc.

:)

Diggin up old threads to try and find connectors is ok in my book.

Re: 4L60E Neutral Safety Switch

the man that built my harness said the neutral safety switch is not needed for the computer that the big round plug feeds all info to the computer the neutral safety switch harness goes straight to gauge cluster the single plug style is 2005 and up mine is from a tahoe.

Re: 4L60E Neutral Safety Switch

HHHmmmmm. Interesting information. I would like to use this feature on my LXs swap. I made my own wire harness. I also have a floor mounted, B&M Shifter, that doesn't have a neutral safety switch. I'm sure I has something to do with the wiring harness and PCM. in someone has this info please post. Thanks in advance, Clark.

Did anyone come up with a wiring diagram for the 4L60e single port NSS? If so, would you mind sharing the data.

Re: 4L60E Neutral Safety Switch

I would avoid using the one mounted on the trans unless it is your only way of installing. Some computers do not need to knows if the trans is in neutral and the old style does not talk to the computer. It is designed only to prevent you from starting the vehicle in gear.
If you decide to use the one mounted on the trans be sure to use the proper gauge wire. It should be the same as the one originally used by the car not the gauge going in and out of the switch.
