Daddy Bob's 1964 GMC 3/4 Ton
 

I am relatively new to these trucks but I came upon a deal i couldnt refuse. I lost my granddad (Daddy Bob) a little over a month ago. I just happened to be at a local farmer's house about 3 weeks ago and they said they had to show me something. I turned the corner and saw it. I almost couldnt believe it. They had bought my granddad's truck from him about 20 years ago. This was the first truck I ever drove and what he first taught me to drive in. They have kept it up as a farm rig and it still runs great. They had recently bought a new truck that was 4x4 and automatic for their farm and were ready to sell this one. They wanted me to have first shot. I have been waiting on them to get their tools and fuel tank out of it. I just picked her up today and did some pressure washing. The only think it know about it is it is 3/4 ton and four speed in the floor with granny low. It also has the 305 V6. My dad and I are going to slowly bring her back to life. I just want it to be reliable and not break me at the pumps. I have been reading on here and have gotten several good ideas. I want a regular bed, 1/2 ton running gear, and maybe an inline 6 for better mileage. Thanks for all the great posts and look forward to sharing my progress.

Another cool story on this truck....my dad told me that my granddad got this from a local mechanic who bought this from some state park service in California and drove it back here to Tennessee. Dad said he can remember it having a camper on top of the utility bed that raised up sort of like a pop-up camper. Here are some shots of my custom floor..haha and after pressure washing.

Hey thats neat! I just got my grandpas 63 lwb that sat in his backyard with a huge camper on the back for like 25-30 years. He passed away April last year.

Guess what we called him? "Papa Bob" :)

Ha! That is wild. Good looking truck! I know this will be slow going but I am looking forward to working with my dad on it.

Went junk yard pickin today with Dad and another buddy in the freezing mud came home with an awesome cab to replace the rusty top....cant wait to get this going!!

Looks like you are going to have a great project on your hands there !!
I hope you keep that 305.
Just tuck it away in a corner where it will be safe, but dont forget about it entirely... They are pretty unique and interesting motors I think, and there may come a day when you wont want to drive it every day, and may want to put the unique soul back into this rig......

If you are looking for tons of great ideas, advice, and just general info about these trucks, you are probably in a good spot !!

So I have looked for a GMC cab to replace mine for almost a year. Last week I found a good Chevy cab at the local junk yard and finally pulled the trigger. I was just going to use the top. Now amazingly 2 miles from home a guy posted a decent GMC cab on craigslist so I just had to go get it!! Now I have a GMC cab to fix the floors to use the whole cab, and also I have a decent Chevrolet cab to sell!!

Above is the cab I need to sell!! Here is the GMC cab me and dad will repair the floor pans and swap....gonna be a fun spring and summer!!

It might be a lot easier just to swap the dashes in these two cabs. I took a dash out of a GMC truck in the junk yard. Took me an hour. There are two or three bolts on each side underneath and about thirty spot welds across the top on the bottom windshield lip. I think it would be a lot easier than replacing the whole floor system and cost you a lot less money. I can send you pictures of the dash I took out of the GMC truck for reference if your interested.

b.sharp that would have probably been easier. Wish I had known this earlier....got a guy coming Sunday to buy the Chevy cab. Maybe I can make a little money and offset the floor pans and weather stripping. At least me and dad will have a good time with all the welding and restore. Thanks b.sharp!

Finally going to try to get started on this cab replacement. There is a ton of rust in the rockers and pillars. I will replace the cab corners while I am at it. I haven't the slightest clue what I am doing though. You guys make it look so easy...as do youtube videos. Trying to figure out where to measure from to get all this to line up.....Hope this doesn't turn into a 10 year project. We shall see....

Looks like quite a project but you'll get through it.

After you get your floor all done, hang your doors then put your rockers on. That way you can make sure your lower gap is correct.
