mini road trip drama
 

Took a drive to Hollister today to drop off a dresser for my grand daughter( Didn't have your number John)
Hollister is about 45 miles away so this would be a maiden trip since putting in the 3.73's in.
She drove nice 185 degrees on the temp gauge oil pressure fine too but I noticed the brake pedal was a bit hard, and had hardly any play not allowing the brake light switch to work. I pulled over and adjusted the pushrod and was back on the road.

10 miles down the road get the same hard pedal. Pulled over again and readjusted it again. I noticed the dust boot was bunched up, too small and the push rod was not "sliding" thru it. I pulled the boot loose and off I go the problem didn't come back.

On the way back I get a little weird idle problem and the there is a little popping on deceleration. but she is running fine. Other then my cd player going out there was no other problems
I get home and lift the hood and notice my vacuum line has come loose from the carb ,and has broken off from the vacuum advance.
What would a road trip be with out a little drama ?
Good guys show next week will see how she drives then.

I love hearing these stories! Thank you for sharing. Most folks these days would wither up and die at these problems. I love that we make the necessary adjustments and "keep on truckin"!

These annoyances are what make driving our rigs fun. For comparison, I have a 2003 Sonoma I bought in Feb. 2004 and have driven it about 24000 miles as my daily driver with absolutely no problems. BORING is how I refer to its driving experience! (Now, could you call that sarcastic?)

I wish my 65 was boring,never having problems. I hate when things break and wish my truck never had problem but I still stick to these old pickups. I never owned anything newer than 67.

When you swapped gears, did you by chance give it a brake job, too?

I swapped the whole rear end... the Dana 44 I had in my '61 ate itself and junked the housing. I had a new housing and 3.42 Posi set up, and then rebuilt the drums on the bench so I could swap min a whole new rear end.
I put the shoes on backwards, and they were dragging... I experienced the exact same issue you did: real hard pedal after driving for a while.

The shoes drag and build up enough heat to expand the brake fluid, which makes the pedal hard.

Yes, new brake shoes,hardware,wheel cylinders hardware and drums.
What was strange is after I pulled the dust boot off of thr mastercylinder all has been fine.I'll pull the drums off and check it out. Thanks for the tip .
