70 Jimmy Custom

I have been looking for a project to work on for quite sometime. Happen to stumble across this old beast. Originally I was looking for something to use in the backcountry for serving with two local search and rescue groups. HOWEVER, now that I am starting to take everything out and find that there are only a couple of spots that are rusted, I am beginning to re-evaluate things.

This Jimmy has everything I was hoping to find installed from the factory. It has the AC, 3.73 gears with lockers. Comes with both tops, half and full. Both are double wall tops and are in decent shape. The full top has a small hole in it, which is a bit concerning, but is only about the size of a quarter. One nice thing that I like is that it has the dual battery and power steering and brakes (so the wife will be more comfortable to drive). :smoke: Have to keep the wife happy during the rebuild.

The absolute best part about this project; As it sits in my driveway as of today, the only money that I have put into it, is the fuel to go get it, 30 miles round trip.

The half top was made by Glasstite. It is not the best fit. I am not sure if I will keep it with the truck or not. As it sits right now, I am still in the process of emptying everything out.

So, I have finally gotten everything cleaned out and thrown away. Got to inspect alot of the pans and so forth. Looks like the passenger side will get new door jams and a floor pan. Both doors are rusted through underneathe.

Having a tough decision to make. I have thought about having this painted with the bedliner material. Part of me things that this might not be a good thing to do because once the stuff is on, it cannot just be sanded off and start over. Has anyone done this and what was the result? Are you happy or dissatisfied?

I wouldn't "bed liner" it, not only is it a permanent decision that you may grow tired of, but it also looks like you have a fairly strait body that wouldn't take much to be presentable.
Its your truck, and obviously do whatever you want to do, but if looking for opinions, every rhinolined exterior iI have seen makes the truck look cheap.

If you plan on plowing through backwoods and expect a large amount of brush scratches with the truck though, it may be worth it for you application.

That aside,
Truck looks awesome, the half-top is pretty sweet, and even sweeter knowing it came with a full top as well.
Also, welcome to the forum!

More pics of it out of the backwoods and all hosed down?

Haven't had much of a chance to do much cleaning. But this is what I have done so far.

Spent some time tearing things down and talking with some about paint and trying to decide exactly how I wanted to have this project look. After some long nights trying to figure this out, I brought in an "expert". He pulled out a rag and asked for some polishing compound. After a nice little buffing in a hidden area, it was discovered the paint was in decent shape. Since I was looking at keeping it orange, it would be pretty cool to keep the color as original as possible.... What do you think so far?
