Ram Horn Exhaust Manifold

I have made a lot of progress on my full retard project I got in the last few weeks. Now I need to start buttoning up my project so I can get her back on the road.

The guy I got the trucks from owes me a set of long tubes, but I am beginning to think they may not be the best way for exhaust. They would be in the way of my front shaft, and put the cross over in a awkward place. The shorties I have don't work well with straight plug heads, and they maybe annoying with the boots I have.

My other choice is Corvette 2.5 ram horns. They seem to be a very good option on cost, and function. As my stockish 350 wouldn't really benefit from headers. Especially at the rpm's it will be working.

Speedway has a set for a good price.

Does anyone know of a better version or a cheaper place to get them including shipping.

Or have header options I should look at.

I plan to run 2 1/2 inch pipes to a 3" Y collector into a 3 inch muffler with a magnaflow muffler. Maybe a Flowstopper super 44 as I loved the way it sounded on a previous build.

Summit has those same manifolds for $98.00 and free shipping. You have to order each one as they don't sell as a pair. But you can save a $25.00 at least.

Re: Ram Horn Exhaust Manifold

Several years ago I bought a rams horn manifold on ebay and the casting seams and edges were rough and had to be ground down. Even then it was not as nice looking as the original ones. Hopefully the ones that you are looking at are finished better.

I do not use headers and anything that does not run down a track. This is all I EVER use. I have had no problems with them at all. I use these because I don't like the accessory ears and I really don't care to cut them off.

Re: Ram Horn Exhaust Manifold

I agree with 72Freak, there's just no need for headers on mild build, daily drivers (like mine for instance). If you're going to open them up occasionally for a blast down the track, then that's a different story. I run the 2.5 rams horns. started off with an e-bay set of corvettes at about $225/set. exhaust guy broke a tab on one of the flanges and that manifold eventually cracked a couple of years later. replaced it with an after market version, basically like the Speedway one for basically that price ($80-90 ea)

p.s.: 2.5s into a 3" would be an excellent way to run, thought about that myself.

p.p.s. buy this: http://www.summitracing.com/parts/rnb-674-504/overview/ $47.97
and the matching one for the other side: http://www.summitracing.com/parts/rnb-674-503/overview/ $51.97

and you should make the $99 free shipping cutoff

Re: Ram Horn Exhaust Manifold

I may do the summit ones as I need a few other parts from them to button up the truck.

The last 2 weekends have been very productive. I have the body bolted down to the chassis I am going to use, and the engine swapped in. I also got rid of other 2 trucks, and sold a few things off them. All I need to do is hook up the wring, and service all the components.

72Freak, does the straight outlet hit your motor mount stands? This has been an issure for some.

I have heard that "urban legend" for years. I have put these on 60-66's and 67-72's, automatics, 3 on the tree and manual shift in the floor, 2x4, 4x4, engine in 6yl holes, engine in V8 holes, 4x4,s 2x4's, trucks, Blazers, Suburbans, 1/2 tons, 3/4 tons, and 1 tons and I have NEVER had an issue.

In the past 60 days we have done a set on a 66 with a floor shifter and a 67-72 with the V8/auto in the correct holes.

You couldn't pay me enough to run stock manifolds.

The graphs and charts show that a good set of 2.5 manifolds ported or not are equal to a good set of headers. A lot of circle track and race cars still use a manifolds. Its personal preference and I just like that "somewhat" OE look.

Good to know. I would like to have 2.5" outlets

We do that because the rules mandate it, not because they flow better. At higher RPM, headers will beat manifolds heads down.

That's good to know 72freak...I was thinking of changing my manifolds from the angled to the straight ones. Now with this new info I might just do that and change the entire exhaust system while I'm at it.

Maybe it is because I'm a big-block guy, but I've always hated manifolds for their propensity to crack in half.

With you on the big block...don't have ant specs or experience on them. This thread was about small blocks and that's what I am basing my info on. Its like comparing apples to refrigerators.

Hit the second page of this. Im not sure of the accuracy but im sure its not far off.

Speedway has these 2.5" manifolds without the hassle of the alternator/pump brackets for $140 and it includes hardware and gaskets:
http://www.speedwaymotors.com/Smooth...Raw,94194.html

Doesn't say who the manufacturer is though.

I'm a high RPM Small Block guy... you couldn't pay me to run manifolds either.

These look great, when I redo my exhaust I will go with these instead of the cheapy ground up ones I put on to fix my leak

Jegs also has a set of smooth ones by Wysco that are 140 shipped. Both these and the speedway ones state that they have a '2.5" collector'. for an outlet. Can anyone confirm whether the inlets are the same as was original on the 62-63 Vette manifolds? It looks to me like inside the inlets there is a restriction/reduction in the diameter. Did orignal 2.5" manifolds have this reduction? Can someone post a pic of the inlets from an OE setup? Thanks!

See this pic from Speedway on the chrome version. The inlet reduces.

I like this alternative from Speedway but they're more money than the stock style ram horns.

Those can be purchased on eBay for around $100 pair. It's what I put on Suburban

I looked at them for quite awhile before getting them and I've never seen them for that cheap, I wish I would have.

Resurrecting this thread.

Has anyone any new suggestions for replacing my ram horn exhaust manifolds on my mostly original 1972 C10 with a 350??

You can get them on Ebay, that's what I did. If you want the straight pipe version check the link to Speedway at the top of this post.

These are the type I got on Ebay[/URL] (probably not from the same seller):

Re: Ram Horn Exhaust Manifold

Just curious, what would be the reason to change them unless they are cracked or something?

Just when I needed them a set came up on kijiji for forty bucks and for the old farm truck they work just fine. My truck will always be a beater.
