Collapsible intermediate shaft?

I'm pulling the front clip off of my truck this weekend. While it's off I was thinking about upgrading to a Collapsible steering shaft. Does anyone have any suggestions for what parts to use?

Thanks

Re: Collapsible intermediate shaft?

I searched the FAQ section. I cannot find anything about using the original column and mounting it to a collapsible shaft. If anyone can point me in the right direction I would really appreciate it.

I do have a 90s Jeep Cherokee shaft has a D on one end and splined on the other. I'm just trying to figure out how you connect the D shape end to the round steering shaft.

Thanks

When I upgraded my 60 stepper with powersteering I ordered the shaft with rag joint and DD steering u joint as a complete kit from CPP.. Never had problems with them and the price was not bad.. here's a pic..

Re: Collapsible intermediate shaft?

I put a 67 shaft into a 66 column but consider myself luck to have found it.

Also check out the Borgeson site if you want more options.

Does anyone know what part number this is?

Re: Collapsible intermediate shaft?

Okay,
I found them @ CPP.
I don't know which one will work with a 65 steering shaft, and a 77 power steering gear.

I have a 65 GMC with a 78 GMC power steering box. I used the collapsible shaft from the 78 GMC with an aftermarket u-joint from Sweet Mfg. It seems like it will work out pretty good. It also takes out any tension that would otherwise be on the steering column bearings from spacing the steering box out with an adaptor plate. Here are some photos of what I did before I welded it all in place. The last photo is the part# of the u-joint I used.

Re: Collapsible intermediate shaft?

thank you. I don't need it necessarily tonight
I'll probably order it on Black Friday.

Re: Collapsible intermediate shaft?

So you cut the stock shaft to mount the u-joint?

LostMy65 11-16-2015 08:59 PM

Re: Collapsible intermediate shaft?

Yes,
but if converting to power steering, we already will be cutting the shaft.
We have to shorten it when we convert to power steering.

This is how it was done on 64 K10 project, a little more description is provided in build. Description below is from build.

"Going with a Borgeson collapsible steering shaft and two universal joints, for safety and tighter steering.

The 1983 K10 gear box steering shaft has 30 splines ( Used on this on project to convert to PS), the rag joint will be replaced by a lower universal joint. The steering shaft will be shortened to accept the collapsible universal shaft. The upper universal joint has a double D connection to original shaft, and the original upper part of the steering shaft will be modified to accept the double D universal joint end. This modification is easily reversed by replacing with an original shaft." Post photos of set-up when complete in build " 64' K10 Project Long Bed".

Re: Collapsible intermediate shaft?

Okay Lostmy65....depending on what gearbox year and how many splines I went with a 67-72 C10 p/s gearbox.. It came with 36 spline and you will have to match the rag joint..I personally never had a problem with CPP and have used them for two builds...they will gladly help you out so call them. Here are the part #s..
(RJC836-CS) RAG JOINT & COLAPSIBLE SHAFT 13/16 36 RAG 70-81 CAMARO
(CPP-UJ7) STEER U-JOINT 1DDX3/4 DD

Re: Collapsible intermediate shaft?

After more reading and research, I want both collapsable and Vibration Reducer.
Any recommendations?

65 steering shaft is 3/4 round. The steering gear box may be different splines but the one I used of a 84 was 3/4 30. Better measure and count the splines. I pulled my shaft and had a machine shop DD the last inch (40 bucks) then used a borgelson joint 3/4 DD to attach an intermediate shaft (cut to fit from speedway) then the rag joint . Basically a joint at.the stub of your steering shaft- you deciede-DD? Weld on 3/4 round or 3/4 pinned? And each joint can be ordered with whatever end you want. Example-3/4 round weld on to 1 inch DD . Or 3/4 DD to 3/4 DD. Many styles and sizes but most common are 3/4 DD and 1 inch DD. When we used to race circle.track we would just weld 3/4 round because it was easy and cheap, not safe but .. The cpp intermediate shaft looks to be the way to go. Just machine your steering shaft end.to DD and count your gear box splines, order 3/4 DD to x splines, measure , cut and bolt it on. They are very forgiving joints. But don't do what I did and cut it to short lol!

Borgeson makes a u-joint that incorporates a vibration reducer.

Thanks, I sent an email to them.
