Need a little advice and some background

1 Attachment(s)
Hey everyone. New to the site. I had some questions. I'm looking for a new truck (new to me). Late 60s to mid to late 70s. I found some that I liked the looks of but now confused on if they are customs or they were actually produced maybe someone could help me. Found a 68 crew cab 30 series. I saw some sites that say we are custom rebuilds and others that say they were production trucks that were designed for municipalities and forestry work. Thanks guys can't wait to hear the answers.

It didn't come from the factory that way.

Re: Need a little advice and some background

Did they make a crew cab in those years or is that one just a custom?

Re: Need a little advice and some background

GM did not make a crew cab in those years.

Re: Need a little advice and some background

When did they start building them?

Re: Need a little advice and some background

I believe the first production crew cabs were in 1973, but I may be wrong.

Are they pretty rare?

A Crewcab in the 1973-1987 body style? Uncommon, maybe. But I wouldn't classify them as being rare.

The square bodies are out there. Finding a nice one that's a different story. I've only seen A few nice ones but I live in California and we pay a lot more in gas than most states. 67-72 are custom made and if you found one for sale it would be expensive. You can find an 80s model pretty easy they probably just produced a lot of them as the years went on

Re: Need a little advice and some background

The truck in the picture is most likely a Suburban that is modified into a truck. A pic of the passenger side is a dead giveaway. A Suburban has 3 doors. Most people don't take the time to build a 4th door. Lot's a of fabrication. It has been done. There were some aftermarket conversions made for the Railroad and Forestry as you mentioned. Take a look at this thread. Do a search on 4 door trucks for others.

I think that truck is a member heres. There were companies that built custom crew cabs back be for 72 pretty much the same places that make limos today. That truck is a custom build by the way the rear doors look.

Re: Need a little advice and some background

Ok got another question for you guys. I have seen all the different trim levels on the Chevrolet trucks. I always thought the Cheyenne was the base model, Scottsdale was the higher model and Silverado was the mid line. is that correct?

Re: Need a little advice and some background

For these years i don't think Silverado and Scottsdale apply, i was under the assumption it was Custom, Custom Deluxe and Cheyenne. There is another that has plaid interior but i cant recall the name.

Re: Need a little advice and some background

Cheyenne started in 71 or 72 and are top of the line. And there is highlander which is the plaid interior truck. Scottsdale and Silverado are square bodies. For 67-72 there's custom, custom camper, custom sport truck (cst), I think custom deluxe is also a square body. The person to ask is special k he seems to know pretty much everything about them

Re: Need a little advice and some background

The trim level names changed & varied through the years. GM tends to bump a name down when new ones come up and when they feel the name has been around enough they dump it. Then they bring it back to create the illusion the new and old are in some way connected.

Pick a specific year and we can tell you how they stack up. This is the 67-72 message board here and they names were the same for two years, three times, through the six year period

Cheyenne came out in 71, as did Cheyenne Super. The trim levels, from lowest to highest (in 71-72) are Custom, Custom Deluxe, Cheyenne, and Cheyenne Super. Highlander seat and/or discount package A/B/C were only applied to a Custom Deluxe trim level and only in 72. Custom Camper is an additional RPO (Z81) package that could be added to any trim level, from Custom all the way up to Cheyenne Super. CST (Custom Sport Truck) is the top of the line trim level (equivalent to a Cheyenne), but in 69-70. The terminology on the SPID carried over into 71 for some Cheyennes (i.e. would be CST Z84 on the SPID or Z84 Cheyenne on the SPID in 71 for a truck with Cheyenne fender emblems). For square bodies (you are correct, Silverado and Scottsdale are squares only) - Silverado came out a few years into the production series and Cheyenne remained for a bit. As Tim alludes to, some trim levels phased out, some remained as new ones came in. Scottsdale came in also. Also, kind of like the Highlander package truck option on a 72, the Scottsdale trim level could be had with Bonanza group options for a few years in the mid-late 70's. Hope that helps. Silverado was top of the line when it came out, just like Cheyenne Super was in 71-72.

Re: Need a little advice and some background

Suburbans, while not as common as pickups, should still be fairly plentiful. There is a section for blazers and suburbans on these forums. I usually see 1 burb for every 10 or so trucks around here in Northern California.
