The fresh 292 runs just fine

The one I just rebuilt and dropped into my 68 K10 4 speed to replace the 250. I found a new set of LP pistons...They are rated at 9.3 compression ...I cc'd the piston depression, cc'd the head ,block was milled .025 to get a reasonable quench and the measured compression is 8.95-1. Bought a mild Schneider cam and just used the intake and exhaust manifolds from the 250..
Started right up, went through the 2000 rpm cam break in and then out onto the road...
It's a lot more snotty that the old 250. Has a strong sounding smooth idle with no lope, pulls nicely through the gears...With the limited intake and exhaust it's no high rpm thing but more than adequate for my purposes...
No one can say the engine compartment is over detailed ;)

Very nice! For as nice as a V8 sounds and performs I'll definitely be keeping my 6 as well. I go to a lot of cruises and shows (even though my truck is no show piece) and that darn 6 attracts a lot of attention and starts some nice conversations.

Sounds like a nice approach to your rebuild. No video? :D

So is a 292 a direct replacement for a 250? Is there anything to watch out for, such as the engine mounts the 250 came with?

*If my 250 ever goes out, a 292 is what will replace it.

Not exactly a direct replacement because of the different positioned right side motor mount and the deeper 292 oil pan clearance issues with the 4x4 cross member under the engine. I fabricated a cross member and mount but with the stock 292 4x4 cross member it would be a bolt in...
I used the stock 250 water pump without the 292 bypass hose. Had to drill a hole in the block to match the extra water port on the 250 pump..
