Questions about Duramax

Hi all, right now I'm looking at possible buying a 2001 RCSB 1/2 ton that's had an 05 LLY/Allison swapped in that has an injector hold down hole that is stripped out. Wondering if anyone has any experience with a similar repair, and what did you use, helicoil or timesert? Also, for those that have owned or own a Duramax, how is maintenance and repairs on a Duramax? I have an idea on prices on general things like injectors, but are there any other common repairs?

Thanks,
Zak

Re: Questions about Duramax

A helicoil would hold if you keep the engine at stock levels. I would do a time-sert and not worry about it.

Hey thanks for the reply, I wasn't sure if a time-sert would be strong enough, but if it'll work I'll use that if I get the truck. But are there any common problems with the LLY platform I should look for specifically on this truck?

Thanks,
Zak

Timesert is GMs approved repair. May even have a fixture online to repair it.

Re: Questions about Duramax

I have a 2005 Duramax that just hit 100K miles. I have had zero problems with it.

I let it sit for 4 months over last summer as I worked in Alaska. I left a battery maintainer on it and when I got home it fired right up.

As far as repairs, the most common seem to be water pump replacement around 200K.
