Old Blue

After I got rid of my 1981 K20 last year, I missed having an old GM truck around. I wasn't actively seeking one, but my cousin had an old pickup he used around the farm yet. He decided to list it for sale just as I was heading to his area for a tractor show. I ended up buying it while I was there and making room for it on my lowboy. My cousin bought the truck in 1988 from the original owner, and drove it to high school and college. The story is that his dad was driving it one winter, slid through a stop sign and got into a fender bender with another car. That's how the driver side fender was bent in. He parked it in the mid 90s and let it sit. Then in 2005 he decided to pull it out and get it running again. The motor was stuck so he pulled a running 350 2 barrel out of a mid 80s Chevy and put it in the truck. He redid the brakes and other wear parts to make it drivable again. Since then he put about 20,000 miles on it.

It's a 1972 GMC 1500 Super Custom. I believe it is original miles on it. The odometer shows around 90,000.

I'm not sure exactly what direction I want to go with the truck yet. I'm thinking about leaving the body just like it is. I like the idea of a small drop with 16" or bigger rally wheels. It runs pretty well the way it is. I just ordered an Edelbrock performer intake for it. I also have an Edelbrock carb for it, a 600cfm I think. It's an original A/C pickup. My cousin recharged it last year with R12 and said it worked great but it must have a leak somewhere. I would like to get that working again.

Anyway, here's a picture from when I brought it home

Here's what the truck looked like when I got it home. The first thing I did to it was pull the old Delta tool box out of it.

Since the 350 in the GMC is a 2 barrel, I ordered a new Edelbrock Performer intake manifold. It just arrived the other day.

Here are some more pictures of the GMC, along with the SPID, and original owners manual. It has power brakes, power steering, air conditioning, and push button AM radio.

Some more pictures. You can still see the grease markings on the firewall.

The second thing I did to the truck was install a tach. It's an old Suntune II tach that came out of my Bel Air when I bought it. After that it found its way into my K20, and then I removed it when I sold it. Last week I installed it in the GMC.

It has been a long time since I have been on this forum and I see that my pictures are gone. I don't have a lot to update. I've pretty much just been driving old blue.

The truck was originally owned by my great uncle. Here are some pictures of it that my cousin sent me.

I swapped the 2 barrel intake and carb for an Edelbrock intake and 600cfm carb. I need to make a hard fuel line, and find a different air cleaner, but this got me going for now.

As I mentioned above, I installed an old Suntune tach that I have had forever.

I also ditched the old wheels for some 16x8 rally wheels.

I've just been driving it ever since.
