The Pontiac Trophy 4 195 ci (Half a 389 V8)

Since I'm almost done with my 1963 Pontiac Tempest Custom Convertible restoration project, I've been focusing on getting this running, so I can concentrate solely on the C10 this year. Bullet Racing Cams came through again for me with a custom hydraulic roller grind. I machined the block for hydraulic roller lifters. She is almost ready to run again.

The Tempest were neat little cars, the Pontiac engineers were really creative. I've got a 400 I need to get rebuilt for my firebird, but I've been putting it off. Nice work on the engine.

Thanks!

I finished the new exhaust mock up enough to hopefully get it back up and running in the next week, or so, and then have it ceramic metallic coated.

Restored and coated the inside of the original gas tank:

Very cool! Always wanted to see one with a modern alloy head and a 4-71 hanging off the side. :metal:

Like this one? There used to be a guy who drag raced one in the northwest that was in a Jeep. He was very quick and super cool. And I think Mickey Thompson used to race one in a rail back in the day.
Also great job on the Tempest! I have liked those for a long time.

I believe you're referring to Roger Manson. He used to drag race his Jeep altered before he went land speed racing. Here is a shot of his blown Pontiac Trophy 4 at Bonneville:

Here's my little 4 bbl, hydraulic roller set up before dropping it in the Tempest:

Love that HO/RamAir exhaust manifold hanging off the Trophy4! :two:
Nice work!

Re: The Pontiac Trophy 4 195 ci (Half a 389 V8)

Thanks! I really didn't have too much choice...I destroyed the original removing it from the cylinder head (it was too corroded to save - it had that old exhaust heater crossover that ended up being a terrible exhaust leak). So I used the passenger side from a set of RA reproduction exhaust manifolds that were laying around collecting dust from a past project.

Love to hear some driving impressions (before and after upgrades if possible)
I enjoy the heck out of driving my kids 66 Volvo with a 4 cyl. Not fast by any definition but still a hoot to drive. Keeps up with in town traffic and makes great noises. (around town, freeway is scary and sounds like a sewing machine about to explode)

So I am hoping for a Youtube of this Pontiac running /driving.

Any pics of the transaxle? Automatic?

It's difficult to photograph the transaxle since it tucks up into the recess of chassis behind the trunk pan and the floor pan. This is a another automatic transaxle on a lift.

Almost ready to get this thing rolling. I'm waiting on my front seat, so in the meantime, I got the converted radio (FM/AM with MP3 port) and the new dash speakers tested and installed.

Finally had some time to start up the Trophy 4 and double check the gauges...
