Good deal?

5 Attachment(s)
What do y'all think about this truck- asking price 5500. Supposedly the truck is 100% rust free, it's got a 350 with a 4 speed transmission. He said he just had transmission work done and now there is a vibration at around 60 mph. What are yalls thoughts on this, good deal or should I pass?

Re: Good deal?

any claim to "rust free" is a red flag. check for bondo. and try to get him closer to $4k. my thoughts...

The market is hot now for these rigs especially the short beds. There is a lot of good in that truck unfortunately many a fool walks into a rust bomb hidden by some slight of hand with the bondo.

Have it checked out, use a detection device to look for old body work, The door jamb pillars and hidden cowl areas are notorious spots, the other areas all the panels are still made today for reconstruction purposes.

Looks pretty good from the one picture and SWB versions sell for a premium. Are you close enough that you can look at it in person? I would take a strong light and check it out really good underneath. Also a couple of the first places to rust on these trucks is the front of the inner fender panel and core support under the battery.

If it's as good as it looks I think it's worth what he is asking but I always take the cash with me when I go look at one and ask if there is any chance he could take a little less for it. Sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't......

the shortbeds are worth alot,it is a nice looking truck, like others have said , check for bondo over rust, take a magnet ,cover it in a cloth and run it around on the body, you will find the bondo...$5500 seems good if it is rust free, talk him down a little if you can because of the vibration....that could be a bad ujoint in the driveline, wrong flywheel, alot of other reasons...if he just had transmission work done and now there is a vibration, why didn't he take it back to the shop or did he do it himself? or is it BS,,,people will tell you anything....

Is their a rust free truck? Something about that paint just don't look right maybe a repaint once in it life. The grey primer on the door is also red flag. But if it is as solid as they say it is I think $4-5 is not a bad price.

The grey primer worries me too.

That truck would go for more $ around these parts.

Re: Good deal?

Unless rust repair was recently done... it has rust.

Engine either isn't original or the owner swapped a long water pump and later model alternator setup. if the V-8 was original to the truck, it would have a short water pump and the alternator on the drivers side.

Also check the frame to see if it's a shortened long bed to make it a short bed. It's a pretty popular conversion right now as Short beds are getting harder to find.

Even if it needs new rockers and spot repairs, it *appears* to be significantly better than the majority of trucks that sell for more than even his asking price.

I'll let everyone know how it goes when I take a look. Hopefully,it will look as good as he says it does.....hopefully

Cold hard cash in hand talks. If it's pretty decent, show him 38 $100 bills. In addition to the already mentioned, I would be concerned with the engine too. Unless I know who did a rebuild, I don't trust it. I might even offer him $3500.
Bottom line is that you don't need to jump head first into the first truck you see, there's lots of trucks out there, and giving $5500 for a cobbled together, baseline optioned former fleet truck? Me, no

Re: Good deal?

I would agree with most comments here regarding being suspicious of the term 'rust free' or 'no rust'....especially given the fact that someone has sanded and primered the lower parts of the door and rockers.....why?
Anywhoooo.....if it looks reasonable and as custom 10 nut stated...you can always offer him $3800 and see if he bites. Don't talk the offer tho'...present it in cash.
If you are going to 'talk' offers you will need to bring the offer amount up because without cash waving clearly and openly....talk is not much....and everyone knows what they say about money vs. talk...lol.
Now, he is asking $5500, which to me means he will accept $5000....at least 95% of the time.
So somewhere between a (lowball) offer and $5000 will be the 'buy it now' price....lol
The rest is up to you....keep us posted.

I'm looking at it this Saturday, but does the gap between the rear passenger tire and fender look off to y'all. Like it's offcenter, driver side not too bad. What are yalls thoughts
