Waterlogged 71 GMC

Someone cleaning out their back yard posted a GM pickup on my FB swap and sell and I ended up with it for $100. He just wanted it out of his yard. He had no idea what is was but by the photos I knew it was close to the 72 I'm doing for my Dad so just for the tin it was worth it. No title so far..developing so whether its a parts truck or a builder to be determined. The glove box and door post vins don't match but the cabpost says its a 71GMC. I'm interested by the cab top lighting...stock. Has mounting bumps stamped into the top and I haven't seen that much so thought I'd throw that out there for the boys who know tons about this. Also, the v8 had lots of water in the crank case so bummed about that. Anyone save a waterlogged motor? I'll post photos on the retrieve and pu as I get them. May put something on youtube also. Dave

Sounds like a good deal, it's easily worth the $100 you paid for it.

As far as the aquarium engine, it's probably junk. Maybe the heads could be ok, depending how much water is in there.

I would say you'd have to drop more cash into that motor than you would a new crate engine. It's probably not even worth tearing down, but if you do you'll at least know what the actual condition is.

Good deal. Even if missing title, you may be able to register it with a bill of sale.

Patiently waiting on pictures...

I'm guessing a MN truck will be pretty rusty, Eric- (too much stuff) has brought home some crusty examples. Hope the roof can be saved. Bring on the pics

Missing title in MN usually means a parts truck.

72 tigger is correct about MN rust. I would look the roof over carefully for rust before you put much time into it.

Have it registered in another state. Some states are easy. MN DMV may also provide you with the last known registrant to track down.

Here's some video of a quick look and loading the 71. Enjoy...some Ford talk the last couple minutes. I'll get some photos posted when I get over to clean it out. Dave

I'm not an expert on these trucks yet, but I believe the radiator core support on that truck (like the tailgate) is a Chevy, not a GMC. Also, the grill appears to be the 69-70 model, not a '71. Just trying to help. Hopefully others will chime in if I'm wrong.

Re: Waterlogged 71 GMC

Probably some of the body is '71 GMC that was placed on a '70 Chevy truck. Between the 6-lugs, grille, core support, and tailgate, I am seeing more '70 Chevy than '71 GMC.

One of the cleanest all original survivors I've seen came out of MN. I doubt it ever ran in the winter. Lots of lakes for fishing up there. Was just a go fishing rig. I've seen such trucks from all around the country where you's never expect a rust free truck.

Now this one isn't one of those, but it could have been for it's first life. It really doesn't look so awful. The eaten up trucks that TooMuch has hauled home have been 4wds, too. They ran regularly all winter from day one, and once they sit the rust worms really feed

That Firebird nose in back should bring more than what you paid for the truck if it was part of the deal .That was a good buy .

Re: Waterlogged 71 GMC

Agreed on the mix and match on this one. Unfortunately, the "owner" has surfaced with a title and wants the truck. It sat eighteen years (and not on his property) and the moment it moved he came running. I may check if there are any type of abandonment laws on the books in MN before I make a move. What a laugh. Good to know on the firebird nose. Tough to move big stuff up in the sticks tho.

ps. The cab is GMC ...to many digits for a Chevy. There is a different serial number that reads chevy on the glove box door so....

Dave
