4500 and 5500 will return for 2018

GM killed the Kodiak in 2008. A cab forward design has been the only option until now. There will be a 4wd version available too. I'm glad to see GM returning to this market.

Is this the Chevy they were mixing up with Navistar on?

It'll be nice to get a big block V8 again. Navistar bought all the rights from GM for the 8.1. I think The Navistar version it up to 8.8 now. Hopefully they offer it in these trucks.

I'm curious if a manual transmission will be offered.

Actually, Navistar was thinking about buying the 8.1L back in 2006 when they were thinking about buying the Topkick and Kodiak from GM, but they pulled out of the deal at the last minute. The 8.1 design when to Powertrain Solutions:

http://www.psiengines.com/

They enlarged the 8.1 to an 8.8, and they sell that engine to Navistar for school bus use. They should offer that engine in the DuraStar truck, but for some reason they won't.

The new 4500 and 5500 will only offer the Duramax diesel at first, but word is they will eventually get a gas engine option. No idea what gas engine at this time.

Re: 4500 and 5500 will return for 2018

Yea, it looks like PSI buys all of there smaller motors from GM.

I hope they just don't throw a little 6.0 liter in these new trucks. The 6.0 is a good motor, but its not good for trucks. The torque cure starts too high in the RPM range. You need torque down low, right where a big block puts it.

notice the Silverodo badge anyone?

Re: 4500 and 5500 will return for 2018

They anounced the silverado name for the medium duty trucks back in september.

It's a bummer there won't be anything bigger than 22,500 GVW, and it's a shame GMC wont get one. And its a shame there isn't a gas engine.

I remember the old(92-02) 6500s that had a GVW of 33,000. And now they are 22,500. How does that work.

Re: 4500 and 5500 will return for 2018

They could have made it all the way to 26,000 and still be under CDL.

That said, it's a pretty good looking truck, although the Tires are too small.

Hope they offer Manual Transmissions in them.

I think there is a very good chance these new trucks will offer a gasoline engine by 2020.

Seems 4500/5500s are more like a gap filler between 1t and medium duty for the toy hauler market than a real medium duty. I see the same thing they've been building only now using a truck cab instead of a van

Around here a lot of landscape companies and lawn/plowing companies went to the kodiaks and such. Tow trucks use a lot of these and will be glad to get them back I'm sure. Dodge even dropped theirs back in 08 or so. That only left Fords in the game. It's good to see GM back in it.
