Bought another classic- 1960 Farmall

Bought a 460 Farmall from my dad- my grandpa bought it new and I’ve planned on buying it for years. Found a good loader on CL and built a new bucket then painted it to match the tractor. Just finished today

Funny thing about the narrow front- on the way home after buying the loader my 81 year old dad says "you're going to take the wide front off and put the original narrow front on, aren't you?" I didn't know why I would do that he said "it will turn a lot shorter". We went round and round about stability and turning radius- I decided to let him have his way- for now. He's convinced that it won't be a issue- he thinks the rear end is heavy enough

I agree with the tricycle turning shorter...some of them you can turn the front wheels almost 90*...stand on a brake and spinner around....the loader with the tri is just unstable...I sure wouldn't get it off level ground with a loaded bucket....you've basically got one point of contact up front....my buddys dad had a super m tri with a loader....got pretty scary at times....still a good looking IH....
my 50hp Mahindra 4x4 with loader w/6' bucket can get light in the backend sometimes and it weighs 6500# |

Re: Bought another classic- 1960 Farmall
I have no idea what year/model my dad restored when I was around 7 years old, but it was an old tractor that had seen hard life in a gravel pit up in Maine. It was complete with a bucket and had sat outside most of its life.
He took that thing apart, piece by piece and gently restored it over a period of a couple of years to use on our farm. I used to drive that tractor daily once I turned 9 and it never let us down. The only failure he experienced was the rear end let go after it was restored, I think the rear differential gears finally gave out due to the abuse it saw in the gravel pits. Great tractor. |

Very nice 460! That narrow front just makes you be a better driver IMO. All we ever had were narrow front tractors with loaders at our place. They sure can get in tighter areas.
