Body panel adhesive
 

I'm replacing the outer roof panel on my 67 c10 ... As many may know the back seam is reversed so you can't weld it .... Has anyone used panel adhesive ? .... I thinking of using it to attach the whole roof panel without spot welding ... Any advice on this ?

I used panel adhesive when I did the cab corners (and a place behind the rear wheel) on my squarebody.

If used properly bonding that roof on in my opinion not only would "work" it would be the best way to do it!

To give you an idea of what this stuff can do, BMW has guidelines for bonding on frame rail splices! We are talking splicing a frame rail at the radiator support cutting the rail off and bonding the new piece on, yes, the bumper reinforcement bolts right to this part bonded on! Not a single weld, rivet, bolt, nothing, it's bonded!

Here is a little science test my 20 year old son did back when he was 10 years old., :D Hopefully you can see the photos being they are on Photoscumbucket and they play games with that. But check it out, it's interesting!

I do have to say that in that patch above, as a rule that is a no-no as the seam will end up showing in the form of a "ghost line" when the bonding shrinks and expands at a different rate.

That being said, we just did a 2017 BMW M2 where we put a quarter on, following the BMW guidelines bonded the seams with a backing just like you will see in this video. We used the BMW metal filled "bondo" to finish it off just as they did in this video.

There are other metal fillers like Evercoats "Metal-2- Metal" http://www.evercoat.com/product-deta...ber/100889/us/

So you don't have to use the BMW product but that it is a guaranteed system.

Check it out, pretty wild! I would have wanted to slap someone suggesting this back just a few years ago. But there it is, one of the biggest automakers in the world known for some pretty high quality, glue that baby on! LOL

Thanks guys .... I guess just the thought of bonding instead of welding is new to me ... I like the thought of no heat on the panel to warp ... I have my panel fitment nearly perfect ...

If you are commenting on my cab corners I chose the cut location so that it would be covered up by the adhesive molding (just in case).

that was a good move Keith. ...

Martin its funny....last week I was researching panel adhesive...google pulled up your experiment. ..I read it all....i was trying to figure out the best way to mount my overhead radio enclosure in my IH...the factory one has screws in the panel above the mirror but it runs back across the inner roof like a overhead console...but with no inner roof to fasten to glueing may be the only option. ..

I inherited this GTX from another "shop" after they welded in new quarters crooked and sagging ,Nothing from the doors back lined up even somewhat close I had to cut the rear side of the wheel opening of the quarter panel and down the front edge of the quarter to get it back to salvageable condition and have decent gaps . Panel bond saved it in a few spots . I have no idea what they were thinking shooting color before finishing all the body first :smoke:

Adhesives on patches require the use of a lapped seam, which results in ghost lines. Following video shows the results.. Any guess where the seam is?

I have to assume that using the metal filler as BMW does that wouldn't happen.

Just be careful when using the panel bonding stuff this time of year. If the temp in your shop gets cold the bond could fail, Lots of guys are probably like me and only heat their shop when in it. I had a roof that I put on aC2500 like a 00 maybe a 01 model and the bond failed. I did everything by the book except having the warm temp in the shop.I just wanted to throw that out so [knowing it might be cold] that don't make a problem

That is a serious structure part, but damn, so is that BMW frame! I say if done properly it's fine.
