Glasspacks or straight pipes???
 

I just picked up an '85 C10 long box with a 350 today for $400(its gonna be my work beater/ parts getter) and the exhaust has seen better days. I was thinking about putting on dual cherry bomb glasspacks and dumping them under the cab. What are your guys oppinions on glasspacks? OR... should I just run dual straight pipes and dump them under the cab or box? My '89 (350)sounds awesome with straight pipes so I'm kinda leaning that way. Anyway state your oppinions and let me know what I should do. TIA, DK

Straight pipes...as in no muffler or cat? No way. Way too loud, and it'll get every cop within two zip codes lookin at you.
Glass packs are awsome for dirt cheap replacements, (which is why I have them) but in the long run...they kinda suck.

Hmmmm, my '89 has dual straight pipes as in no mufflers or cats and I've driven right next to cops on mainstreet in 3rd gear and they just keep going. I wonder why they havent pulled me over yet tho? All my friends say that they can hear me coming for about a mile and a half away, lol. I know that eventually I'll get a fix it ticket for my pipes but untill then I'll be one of the loudest trucks in my area.

On the glass pack issue, How do they sound? I've heard mixed reviews on them sounding crappy and sounding nice. I'm looking for that nice deep throaty sound but I still want it fairly loud. Is there a certain type of glass pack I should buy?

Glasspacks make a obnixous cackle.....on some motors that are pretty sick (like a smogged out 305), they sound almost like someone farting. When they have chrome echo tips they sound OK. I think it would sound OK if you ran 2-1/4" dual pipes, 18" long packs, and tips that are around 3" in diameter and at least 18" long....would sound pretty good then. Just don't run short glasspacks w/o tips....sounds pretty nasty IMO.

Remeber there is a difference between having a loud truck and a truck that sounds good.....back when i was 16 i just wanted a loud truck....now that i have matrued a very small bit and am 19, i really like my truck that is fairly loud and sounds GOOD :)

I'm personally a Flowmaster fan....but they are pretty expensive at around $50 for the cheapest models.

Do yourself a favor, put on some turbos, it'll sound much better and pick-up hp from straight pipes...

Stock and near stock motors need back-pressure to run right...

On my '89, like I had said before, its straight piped right out the back with 3 1/2" x 18" long tips and it has that perfect deep/loud chevy throaty sound. I also agree with you that loud trucks that ar loud just because sound like crap(mostly f@rds that I've heard, lol)

If you want glasspacks, get Thrush Magnums. No restriction (inner core is big & smooth), & they're under $20 a pop. If they're too loud, get 2 more & run them in tandem.

Just my 3 cents....Avoid mufflers they sell out of a barrel by the cash register at the local Kragen,Schucks or Autozone. Get some Turbos. You will be much happier and the price is reasonable.

straight pipes use to be the real meaning of rap, nothing like playing the pipes, go for the straight pipes and have some fun, but you didn't hear it from me when the cops come down on you

Go with flowmasters!
 

I have had V8 trucks with all three, straight pipes, glass packs and flowmaster mt ufflers and the flowmaster 2 chamber mufflers were the best by far. They sound great and are still loud enough for good engine exhaust sound but don't have the obnoxious snap crackle and pop of the other two. The flowmasters also make a fairly mild engine sound like a serious performer.

I run glass packs with the glass all knocked out of them. Yes very loud, and I wouldn't have it any other way. Oh yeah, they exit just past the cab. They really get loud at full throttle while kicking it, but I can usually rumble past the pigs without much attention. It's definately not something I can drive after drinking very much though :lol:

Just take a 1" drill and start going through the center of the mufflers (this also works well for those newer vehicles that are required to have cad. converters) :lol:

LOL..... It might be fun to get the pigs all pissed off... all they can do is give me a fix it ticket;)

Well I think I know what I'll do.... I'll run dual straight pipes just past the cab and dump them, and if thats way too loud for my liking, I'll put two glasspacks in....

Glass packs start out sounding good and eventually start that crackling noise and sound bad. I like the Magnaflow sound also. Check ebay for mufflers.

I have turbos on my truck. They sound great. Flowmasters produce a drone at around 2500 rpm that just rattles my brain. I can't stand it. I wouldn't recomend running straight pipes simply because if you get one fix it ticket they will jack with you every time they see you.

Hmmmm, I've been running 30" glasspack blanks for many years now, with downturn pipes dumping behind the mufflers, in front or the rear axle. They're pretty well burned out & should be replaced, but have never made any snap, crackle, or pop sounds. I personally am not crazy about Flowmaster sound, but Magnaflows seem to have a nice deep rumble.

according to the cop around here glass packs are not legal because i got caught fo just having straight pipes so i put on glasspacks but there too loud too so i have to put mufflers on

In some states they can get you for noise laws, but they have to get a decible measurement using established procedures to give you a ticket for noise polution. Lots of factors affect the decible reading. Where you pipes dump at, where they measure from and the height they measure from. Get a copy of the statutes in your state. Don't argue with the cop on the street it will do no good but prove your case in court. Let the courts take care of over zealous officers. I know alot of people don't have faith in the courts, but judges also hate it when cops write frivolous tickets that waste thier time.
