hydro boost braking system?

Does anyone make a hydro boost braking system for a 67 C10?

I just adapted one from a 2001 Silverado 2500 HD. There's lots of posts and information on this site where lots of people have adapted/installed factory units from several different donors. It just seems to me like the prices they're asking for the new bolt on kits are extreme. I would suggest you do a little research - on this site - visit a local pull-a-part and save several hundred dollars.

How do you like your new system?? How did you do your lines for it? Take some pics and post! I've read someone using that exact brake system. Seemed fairly easy to do.

I used an 08 Silverado 2500hd setup on mine. Pictures and parts list are on the last page of my build in my signature.

I'm not sure I would shy away from a nice kit if you have the money. Look at the kit in the photo. And you can route the pump lines nicely. I put my hydroboost on as a test to see if it really was better... IT IS!

I may still get a kit, I like it.

Only thing I would suggest on using junkyard stuff is to get the master with the booster.

And, forget about the special socket for getting that stupid claw tooth nut off the mounting plate. Just bust it off and use a spanner nut. You can torque it down with a gland nut wrench.

Also, you want the proper accumulator for Disc/Drum or Disc/Disc.

But like said, you can do it for dirt cheap. And lots of support here. :chevy:

I hate this stupid nut!

Did you have a lot of trouble getting the nut off? Mine came off pretty easy with a vice and an 18 or 24” crescent. I reused the factory nut with my captain fab brackets with no issues.

It wasn't the nut so much as the way it was buried in the mounting plate. I used a system off an 85 one ton. The bracket had the nut countersunk, you can't get the jaws of the crescent or channel locks in that countersunk area to get a bite. I used an air chisel and busted it off. Figured I would just buy another nut, none to be found. So I used a spanner.

Here's a top view of the mounting bracket with the spanner nut on, and you know how fat those are. Plus you can use the retaining lock. You can see how deep in the bracket it's buried.

An annoying nut configuration. Fun project though. Here's a couple pics I have on file.

Here's the spanner buried in the mounting bracket off an 85 CUCV

Re: hydro boost braking system?

The one-ton square body version is the one to look for used as the mounting plate is easy to make work on our trucks but many other applications will work too with a little more work. The Astro van version works fine but is not as heavy duty so if you use your truck to haul heavy loads I would not use the Astro van unit.

The hardest part is getting the nut off the back if you need to put it on another style of mounting plate to fit your firewall but after that it is just getting the right lines to fit your application. I needed a 3-foot long breaker bar to get the last one loose.

The square body truck lines & routing are nearly identical to what would have been on our trucks if they came with it so they work well for us and for other front steer muscle cars like the Chevelle. I am still trying to work out some of the lines for the rear steer setup on my Camaro. I want to use factory lines from some application so I can get a replacement easily if needed while on a road trip rather than having a custom hose that is difficult to replace.

You can get the pressure and return lines for the square body version with either the old style inverted flare fittings or the newer O-ring style fittings since it was available for quite a few model years. They are available new at pretty much any auto parts store for a pretty reasonable price. This being said the booster is also available with either inverted flare or O-ring fittings so if you find the inverted flare version you do not have to mess with your steering gear box or power steering pump fittings. Everything can stay inverted flare.

That’s good to know. The one I’ve got was flush against the plate not counter sunk. I bet that was a real blast to get apart

Yep, took the pneumatic air chisel too it! And that's why you need to use the spanner nut with the gland wrench. That little wrench was a life saver! :chevy:

The astro van hydroboost is identical inside to a 80's 1-ton unit. only difference is the pushrod length. had many of them apart resealing them. it wasn't until 98ish they had bigger ones on some of the bigger trucks.

Re: hydro boost braking system?

Hey Ryan, sorry, haven't been on the site in a few days. Actually, my truck is a long ways from running. That said, I bought the whole 2001 2500 HD truck to get the Lq4 and 4L80E out of it. I got to looking at the hydroboost and thought it looked like it'd fit. I took the bracket off the back, turned it upside down, trimmed it up a little to clear the steering column, redrilled a few holes and it bolted right up. I'll have to modify the rod to make it work with the original brake pedal - or modify the brake pedal to work with the rod, and I think it'll be good. I plan to use all the original hoses from the 2001. The only issue may be the connections on the steering box - which I don't have yet. So I'll have to cross that hurdle when I get there. I'll try to post some pics this coming weekend.

That is good to know. I guess the bigger one I pulled off a square body dually at the wrecking yard wasn't original to the truck then as it was clearly larger than the Astro van one I had already. I wish I still had it to get some numbers off of it now to figure out what it really came off of. Sadly I put it on a truck I sold last summer and I don't have access to it any longer.
