91 throttle body
 

greetings. I own 1991 1/2 ton 4x4 with 350 EFI. I am having a challenge lately I can't seem to get to the bottom of. My accelerator pedal sticks when idleing. Starting out from a stop is a real adventure all of a sudden. I've checked the cable and it seems fine. Is there an inherent problem with the throttle bodies on these vehicles? A bushing that wears out? What could be making it bind like this? I've unhooked the throttle valve cable and it still does it... seems to get worse as the vehicle warms up..... any ideas here? thanks. wall:flag:

You description is a little odd. Is it just idling high or is it stick after you hit the gas? Return spring still on it?

It's almost like a "binding"... the accelerator literally sticks when I'm pushing the gas pedal. It seems to get worse as the truck gets warmer. When the vehicle is turned off it works fine. Go figure. Any ideas? thanks. walleye1:banghead:

Grab the shaft on the throttle body and wiggle it around and see if it has a lot of side to side slop.

If it does then what is probably happening is once it has manifold vac it pulls down on the throttle plate and it binds. I think you can have a maching shop put a bushing in it just like a carb.

Thanks GR... I'll check that out. Where would a bushing go? Right there on the shaft? I appreciate the advise. How much slop is alot of slop? I imagine the tolerances are pretty small... again, thanks! I'll post what I find when I get a chance. walleye1

OK. As is the custom with how I try to fix things, I decided to try the simple things first. I could find no (significant) play in the shaft so even though the accelerator cable seemed OK I replaced it. Low and Behold, problem solved. Go figure. I got really lucky on this one!
