Makers marks on OEM bolts

I’ve noticed a wide range of makers marks on OEM bolts and thought I’d start a thread on the topic. You don’t see these on new hardware. Here are just a couple for starters. Feel free to add others and I’ll post more on occasion.

Here are some bed bolts for a 1970 C10 Fleetside

"Ferndale" fasteners and "Lang" fasteners were a couple that I remember.

Ferndale was designated with an "F", I don't recall if Lang's had anything on them at all.

They were used for front fender to rad support attachment, among other locations.

Here's another one - inner fender to outer fender from a 1970 C10.

So far I think they are NLA unless you find old stock.

They (the U-Nuts) appear to me made from a single stamping; and it must have been a big press to flow the steel around in the die so much; unless they are stamped red hot but that sounds difficult too.

The only maker's mark is the diamond shaped logo.

When I first looked at the title I was thinking why would you put whiskey on bolts...

I do try to reuse the originals if possible.

Was hoping you would chime in Keith. If Ferndale used an Art Deco looking “F” it’s my favorite. The anchor logo is a close second.

After the clear zinc replate the finish is brilliant and hard to capture - awesome looking bolts when in hand. These examples here have captured cutting washers and were used to afffix harness ground wires to the rad support and the clamp for the battery tray.

Again hard to capture the finish - these have cutting washers and are used to affix the reverse and tail light lenses with some dum dum along the threads.

I'll follow this thread. I too am fanatical about fasteners and details.

I once bought a 71 Monte Carlo just for the horn relay. It was a one year only relay, and I needed it for a Corvette I was restoring.

Pete, who does your coatings on your bolts?

Interesting topic. This is a significant portion of NCRS Corvette judging where the head marks varied over at least the solid axle years. I have experienced it firsthand. I also reused most of my originals on my truck.

Larry I used a local shop when I was living in Albuquerque, Kaehr Plating (http://www.kaehr.com) IronCanine has used them as well.

Other members have used Arrow Plating in Ft Worth (http://www.arrowplating.com).

I’ve replated all sorts of stuff and have been really pleased.

Agree...

I was told by my high school auto shop teacher some 38 years ago:

“The more marks on the head of a bolt, the stronger it is.”

Pretty generic, but still true.

(It’s amazing what you can remember when you are interested...!)Lol!

Re: Makers marks on OEM bolts

Yesterday I installed a cool little 3/8 bolt for the distributor hold-down. It's the only one like it off the truck. Recessed head flange bolt, 3/8-16 x 9/16", stamped "E". Not tapered.

Few weeks ago I installed a bolt marked with a triangle for an A/C support bracket. Kind of cool, because the bracket is stamped with a triangle as well, almost as if it were a kit.
