Truck parts on Craigslist ... search string?

Any of you guys have any luck selling truck parts on Craigslist? Im going to be having some stuff to move before the end of the year that are going to be bigger than I want to ship.

Curious if its more flakes than buyers? I know selling a running driving truck gets you a ton of flake responses.

What sort of search string do you use to reel in the lookers? Probably use the same search string looking for parts too.

I hear a lot of good feedback on Facebook Marketplace, but I'm not going to join Facebook just to sell a few larger parts.

I used to sell a lot of parts on craigslist, always had great luck, and met lots of interesting c10 enthusiasts. But the last year or two the buyers literally just disappeared. It’s a bummer because I don’t do facejunk.

I usually just search 67-72 and find plenty of parts. It's hard because we don't have a name like squarebody or something. Good luck!

Re: Truck parts on Craigslist ... search string?

I have great luck selling parts on Craigslist still. I never have had flakes on parts and vehicles just get obvious scammers you just ignore. I just posted parts this morning on FBM for the first time. Maybe not flakes, but so far just silly questions as if it's just to talk or people really know very little. All responses have been from the 67-72 Salvage group.... the only group I checked. I list 88-98 GM C1500 styled steel wheels with full description and pictures, but I get asked, "What's the bolt pattern?". Each item got similar questions. Like Craigslist I see I got some action and get all excited. CL is all the scammers right away and FBM was dumb questions right away. And yes, within a couple hours I got the classic "Is this still available?" on a set of wheels. I answer "Just posted. No replies yet. These could be yours" and I get back "Not right now". Just wondering I guess  It seems both CL and FBM share that one.

+1 for Facebook. I’ve had good luck both on Marketplace as well as the 67-72 truck parts group.

In my limited experience it's area specific. Montana was decent. Albuquerque was mostly flakes as well as scammers. Here in WI it's dead but I haven't had correspondence from scammers and no flakes (I've posted four items for sale here in WI with one sale).

I did a Craigslist part search using 67-72 and most of the good stuff was Franks.

Ill just wait until I'm ready to move some large pieces and give it a shot.

Mark,

Here is a web site that I have seen locally but have not personally dealt with.

https://offerup.com/

Maybe someone has used this site and can chime in?

Good luck. ;)

I’ve bought a few things on offer up. Didn’t even occur to me to give them a shot, thanks!

Re: Truck parts on Craigslist ... search string?

I've entered the realm of listing parts on FB Marketplace and on three 67-72 GM Truck groups about a week ago. Worthless IMO. I haven't sold a thing, just annoying questions from people who feel they have to post something once they look. Same hollowed out meaningless content lacking chit that bothers me about FB. I list good pictures and descriptions and the replies I get are the one thing I didn't type because it's redundant. Maybe I'm spoiled by the well educated members here. No responses from Marketplace itself, just from truck groups. I list "88-98 C1500 styled steel wheels" and 15 x 7. I get "What's the bolt pattern?". I feel like saying "The GM 1/2t 2wd disc brake pattern used since '71". Another guy wanted them for a '65 Grand Prix till he realized there were no hubcap nubs. I list 88-98 2500/3500 wheels and 16 x 6.5. I get asked "What are they off of?". I answer "All 88-98 C/K/G model 2500s and 3500 single rears". I listed 4 things and right away get all these responses asking one question and then no more, and haven't had a response since. I've gotten "likes". Boy that makes me feel good... LOL! This listing only lasts a week before requiring a renew. Why do that? I think they are already all talked out. I just want to sell this stuff.

I still like Craigslist better. I enjoy the conversations I have with people who come to buy the item once they are here.

Re: Truck parts on Craigslist ... search string?

Facebook Marketplace seems to be the new Craigslist. I have an FB account purely to deal car parts and for nothing else. It is annoying when you post a part on Facebook and get a bunch of “interested!” Comments. Ok, what does that mean? Are you going to buy it or not lol

Re: Truck parts on Craigslist ... search string?

I just checked again. I responded to a WTB for a gas pedal assembly for a '68. Message back said "Thanks. This is for my uncle. I'll let him know" I mean, it could be a real deal going on. But my first impression is not impressed. I'm not a trend hopper, Craigslist is good as ever, and I'm still using it with success. I should post the same parts there to make a true comparison. More responses on FB but so what?

Hey cg, I have had great luck selling truck parts on Wenatchee's Craigslist.
The saddle tanks, rear end went fast. I have found as long as you give a good description and lots of pictures it works very well.
Good luck!

I just picked up a cherry passenger door for $200 on craigslist yesterday. I used my search string "67-72" and I have emails sent when new parts pop up.

Re: Truck parts on Craigslist ... search string?

You get flakes from FB marketplace also. The last couple parts I sold on it had a bunch of "is this still available" responses minutes after I posted and a bunch after that with no other replies. Craigslist and FB marketplace are more of a pain in the backside anymore.

Re: Truck parts on Craigslist ... search string?

Never had flakes on Craigslist around here. No "I just need to talk to someone" responses, either. Just people interested in what I am selling. I have always sold everything I have listed on Craigslist.

This guy with an uncle needing a part got back to me, "He already found one". Maybe should've checked on that first, ya think? Now I have a guy responding to my Dana60 REAR, as in back of truck, "I have a Dana60 for my P30 that was originally IFS. Do you have springs or the brackets?". Sorry buddy, but didn't get any '77 or newer K30 front axle parts along with this '68 rear axle, but thanks for acknowledging my existence

I listed a set of rallye wheels on Craigslist yesterday that I already had on FB. I have a guy promising up and down he is for real and will actually be here tomorrow morning (so I wouldn't sell them out from under him). Sounds like a nice guy. We messaged back and forth several times. He admitted he wasn't knowledgeable on the rallye wheels and asked a lot of questions to be sure he wouldn't be wasting either of ours time. We'll see. Maybe you guys who say Craigslist is dead should try listing in my area  JK! But on parts I have only had local responses, I listed vehicles twice and both times I got a buyer out of upstate NY coming down to buy. Both smooth transactions

Re: Truck parts on Craigslist ... search string?

Here's the search string I typically start with on CL (in the 'auto parts' or cars+trucks' for sale category):

(67|1967|68|1968|69|1969|70|1970|71|1971|72|1972) (chevy|chevrolet|gmc)

Inside the parentheses are the terms I'm searching for, the vertical bar means "OR", example: 67 OR 1967 OR 68 OR 1968 etc

If this returns too many results you could add this to the end:
(pickup|pick-up|"pick up"|truck|c-10|c10)

Note that there must be a space between the groups of parentheses.

You can also fiddle with "search titles only" and "include nearby areas" to expand/reduce the search.

HTH,
Jon
