1999 Chevy Silverado 1500 - 4L60E won't go past neutral, wheels don't move

I recently picked up a mechanics special truck for the winter, I was told it needed a torque converter but the guy had one he'd send with it, he just had other projects he'd rather work on.

My father has been a mechanic for 30 some years and owes me some money so he agreed to "work some off" by getting this truck moving. He admittedly isn't a transmission guy, though. He was able to swap converters in the transmission but the truck still doesn't move.

Currently you can physically "shift" to every position but the dash only goes to R or sometimes N. D123 never light up. Revs drop when shifted into R and come back up when shifted into N. There is no change in D123.

Any transmission guys got some clue to where we should be looking?

Does the truck back up? Then it's not the torque converter.

The indicator is controlled by a switch bolted to the drivers side of the transmission. If someone tried to unplug the electrical connector the switch is likely now broken.

If it will not forward have you pulled the shifter all the way to manual low or second? If it doesn't move forward in any shifter position I'd say the forward clutches are toast or the forward sprag is bad. (not that common)

It's on jackstands in the air currently but the wheels don't move in any gear. The fact that the dash wasn't lighting up and drive gear had be wondering if that was a symptom of the switch and got me wondering if the switch isn't working would the computer even make the trans shift?

Like I said, I can move the column shifter to the D, 1, 2, and 3 positions but the dash indicator doesn't reflect it.
