Ignoramus with non charging battery
 
I searched, I did. I even posed my question in a (really old) thread. However I think maybe the thread might have bee a bit too old?

Application:
1966 C20 Camper Special
350 motor

Won't charge the battery.
The Alternator seems to be working. However I was told at FLAP's counter it's self-regulated. I replaced the Regulator anyway. No charge on the battery.

Okay... in the old thread someone mentioned the battery may not charge if the (new) External (stock) Regulator was still on line. Okay, so how do I take the Regulator out of the loop? If I just unplug it, will everything still work? I suppose it can't hurt all that much as it isn't presently very functional, but I don't want to make things worse either.

Get a voltmeter and measure the voltage across the battery after it's sat, and then w/ the engine running. Also try measuring with the engine running at ~2k RPM. A charged battery is 12.6V. The tenths are meaningful so posting 12V isn't.

THANK YOU! Yes it was VERY helpful... I hope. One does hope switching wires like that doesn't flambe' the wiring...

Now I wait on recharging the battery.

Okay.... remember the ignoramus part? I wasn't kidding. Turns out the alternator is not self-regulated.:but::dum::rolleyes: Okay, so I put everything back (using those apparently evil crimp connectors) where it was. Seems the problem may have been a grounding issue after all. I'm gonna need a whole new harness on this truck... Good thing it was in the plans to begin with.

Well, we figured it out at O'Reilly's. It was a bad positive feed wire from the main junction back to the battery. Problem is, that wire is crimped into the junction with a bayonet-type connector on the end of the wire.

The issue causing the problem was one of those evil little crimp connectors I am so fond of. Cut that segment out and re-connected to the battery and WOO HOO! It WORKS!! The key-start issue is solved too!:ennyd::wave::blz2:
