Removing old primer

I just bought a 72 truck and it looks like someone rattle canned primer over the original paint. What’s the best way to remove the primer without getting in to the paint underneath? I’m hoping to get down to the original and find it to be good enough for a driver. Thanks for any help.

Re: Removing old primer

It all depends upon the primer used. Some of the cheaper stuff will practically rub off with compound or a mild solvent. Even "Goof-Off" type adhesive remover could work. Obviously, some experiments are needed. Pick a hidden or out of the way area and start there with the mildest solvents, then gradually introduce more volatile solvents until the rattle can primer or (worse) factory paint loosens. You just might get lucky and end up with factory paint you can buff out.
Here in CA, many formerly common solvents have totally disappeared from shelves due to environmental restrictions, so it's hard to make worthwhile recommendations.
