L31 Crate Engine available again

I see they are available again with quite the price increase! No more $1800 long blocks.

And yet people will buy them vs just rebuilding.

Ouch! Did they go with the platinum pistons?

Re: L31 Crate Engine available again

wholly crap!!!! Id think I'd rather rebuilt one for that price. pretty sure I can get it rebuilt for less than that....wow.

Jeg’s and Summit have reman L31’s much cheaper.

https://www.jegs.com/i/JEGS/059/0282/10002/-1

Likely be as good as a new one.

Re: L31 Crate Engine available again

Almost everyone is going LS so all small block crates have increase due to lack of demand.

Re: L31 Crate Engine available again

Careful with these crate L31s. I bought 4 at different times of the year and 3 out of the 4 had whining or crappy oil pumps that went out within months. They were all Melling pumps too. And don’t be fooled by the warranty. If you’re a DIYer, the amount of paperwork you have to submit and the time it takes for GM to approve warranty repair is ridiculous. After about 5 months of GM warranty crap, I just replaced the pump on my own and gave GM the finger.

Are you talking about the new GM L31 crate engine, or the rebuilt L31's?

I was told ALL of the GMPP small blocks were consolidated here (and no more Mexico) although I only have personally seen the reman plant. Based on the timing of the price change it makes sense...

It looks like the L31 at the Jeg's link was a new replacement, and they said they still have at least ten left at the $1800 price. So the sky's not falling, yet. :chevy:

Re: L31 Crate Engine available again

WOW is right! That dramatically change my plans.

I did a little math with my local machine shop a year ago and this engine made sense price wise. With all the machine work it was just 300-400 more for a brand new engine. For me and the fact it was pull one out, swap externals to new motor and slap it back it, it was worth the difference. Now looking at a grand difference or more...... not so much.

Looks to me like that is for a rebuilt replacement.

Says right in block information.
Seasoned block.
Easy to figure out what that means.

Salt and pepper? Basil and herbs?

Couple hours at 200* covered in olive oil?

Nobody seems to care that used blocks are better? Core shift is done and machined out during the rebuild.

Re: L31 Crate Engine available again

You guys are funny.
The best seasoning is McCormick's Montreal Seasoning.
I put it on everything from tritip to mushrooms to hamburgers ;-)

Wow, you're right! I totally missed it. That advert is sneaky.
It seems all new until you see the "1996-2000 seasoned OE block" in the details.
And the block has 2-bolt main caps.

EDIT:
on the plus side, Scoggin-Dickey has them for $2300 including shipping. Not $1800, but not bad, and not $3300.

That is not a L31. It is a stock 350 with 2 piece rear main seal 76 cc heads
